Alpine, rotating seats
No sooner had Flavio Briatore made the decision to bench Jack Doohan and give Franco Colapinto the opportunity to showcase himself over five Grands Prix, a new rumor has emerged at Alpine regarding the future of its driver lineup.
Talks with Sergio Perez
It was the British outlet The Race that reported the first talks between Sergio Perez and Alpine have already taken place, exploring a potential collaboration for the 2026 season. As is well known, the experienced Mexican driver (who turned 35 last January) is currently without a contract after being dropped by Red Bull following a highly disappointing year and a half.
Sergio Perez, who enjoys the backing of very wealthy sponsors (namely Carlos Slim), is more determined than ever to return to the paddock and has long been in talks with Cadillac for a full-time drive — negotiations which were said to be nearing completion as recently as a week ago.
Alpine already has Pierre Gasly under contract for 2026 and is assessing its options. While Sergio Perez is not considered the top candidate, he has now certainly entered the shortlist after these initial contacts — alongside Franco Colapinto, who will need to prove his worth in the coming months, and Paul Aron, the team’s reserve driver.
Perez’s camp clearly sees Alpine as a strong alternative, especially considering the team will be using Mercedes engines next year — a detail not to be overlooked under the new regulatory framework.
