In his debut season in Formula 1, Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli has often been compared to reigning world champion Max Verstappen, but what does former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher think about the young Italian’s progress and potential?
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is currently the youngest driver on the Formula 1 starting grid. Given his young age and the exceptional talent he demonstrated in the junior categories, Antonelli reached the pinnacle of motorsport in a remarkably short time. For this reason, he has frequently been compared to Max Verstappen, with many observers asking whether this comparison is fair or perhaps too ambitious.
Ralf Schumacher, in a recent interview with German publication BILD, shared his views on the young Italian talent from Mercedes and provided a brief analysis of Antonelli’s performance over the first fourteen races of the 2025 season. Despite being a rookie, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has already made history for Italian motorsport by securing a podium finish in Canada. This marked the first time in sixteen years that an Italian driver reached a Formula 1 podium, with Jarno Trulli being the last to achieve this milestone in 2009. However, in the subsequent races, some challenges have emerged that have affected the consistency of Antonelli’s results.
Schumacher’s opinion on Andrea Kimi Antonelli
The European rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 season were not particularly favorable for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, due in part to several technical issues with his Mercedes car. These difficulties, especially evident during qualifying sessions, often compromised his final race results. Antonelli himself admitted that he has not yet been able to extract the full potential from the car during a single-lap qualifying effort.
According to Ralf Schumacher, for Antonelli to fully demonstrate his exceptional talent, he still requires time and experience. “I think Kimi [Antonelli] is a strong driver, but he simply needs more time. He moved through the junior series very quickly, and as a result, he has limited experience. When things go well, he is fast, but the car has often been very challenging,” Schumacher explained.
However, Schumacher was also very clear about the limits of the comparison to Max Verstappen: “I wouldn’t define him as the next Max Verstappen.”
Ralf Schumacher’s remarks underline the need for patience when assessing the career trajectory of highly talented young drivers like Andrea Kimi Antonelli. While his early podium finish demonstrates that he has the potential to compete at the highest level, Schumacher emphasizes that true greatness requires time, experience, and the ability to adapt to the complexities of Formula 1 machinery. As the 2025 season progresses, all eyes will remain on Antonelli to see how this promising young driver continues to grow and whether he can consistently translate his raw talent into race-winning performances for Mercedes.
