F1 | Red Bull’s new Power Unit: why Max Verstappen could be the secret weapon. Red Bull unveils a sneak peek of its 2026 F1 car and Power Unit with Ford.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB21, 2025 F1

Day by day, anticipation is growing among F1 fans eager to see the new 2026 cars. On the night of January 16, Red Bull, in collaboration with VCARB, offered a first glimpse of what the Milton Keynes team’s 2026 Formula 1 car will look like, revealing its new livery. The team has also announced the start of a new technical era, introducing a self-produced engine in partnership with Ford. This important step naturally brings some uncertainties, but it also marks a major milestone for the team.

The Milton Keynes advantage

Ben Hodgkinson, Director of Red Bull Powertrains, explained the central role of Max Verstappen in the development of the new Power Unit during an event in Detroit. Speaking to the media, Hodgkinson emphasized the four-time world champion’s contribution to the project, highlighting the advantage Red Bull could gain from his involvement.

According to Racingnews365, Hodgkinson acknowledged that the full value of Max Verstappen’s input under the new regulations will only be clear once the car hits the track. “I think the real value of Max with this regulation will emerge when he goes out on track. Of course, he’s already been on the simulator, so he has already provided some contributions,” Hodgkinson explained. Teams will still have to wait a few days before the first official testing sessions in Barcelona.

Max Verstappen: a potential secret weapon

Under the new technical rules, Hodgkinson believes drivers will play an even more critical role in terms of car management and race strategy. This is where Max Verstappen could provide a decisive edge for Red Bull. “So I think Max will give us an advantage in this regard, because his ability to process information while driving at 320 km/h is, in my opinion, simply world-class. So yes, I’m excited to see what he can do,” Hodgkinson added.

With Max Verstappen’s unmatched skill and experience, Red Bull hopes to maximize both the performance of their new Power Unit and their overall competitiveness in the 2026 season. Fans and rivals alike will be watching closely to see if the combination of a new engine and Verstappen’s expertise will give the team an early advantage in the championship battle.
