F1 | Oscar Piastri collapses in Baku: the driver’s manager speaks
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix turned into a difficult chapter for Oscar Piastri. The young McLaren driver ended up in the wall twice between Saturday and Sunday, mistakes that heavily compromised his weekend. The Australian talent’s errors in Baku slowed his chase for the championship, and even his manager, former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, acknowledged the pressure weighing on his protégé.
Doornbos and Webber’s words: “Oscar is human”
Former F1 driver Robert Doornbos also weighed in on the situation, echoing the thoughts of Oscar Piastri’s manager Mark Webber. According to Webber, the difficult spell began right after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza:
“It’s surprising that all of this happened immediately after Monza, where there was some tension. I believe Oscar suffered a setback there: he lost six points compared to Lando Norris due to a slow pit stop in an unusual situation. Oscar is simply human, and we should not forget that he has far less experience than a champion like Max Verstappen.”
McLaren between mistakes and pressure
Doornbos also highlighted a key point: McLaren itself cannot be considered free of responsibility for the setbacks.
“The championship is not decided yet. McLaren makes too many mistakes, both from the drivers and in the pits. Mathematically, if Max Verstappen wins every race and Piastri always finishes third, Verstappen can still win the title.”
For McLaren, it will be essential to minimize strategic errors and operational mistakes in the pit lane. For Oscar Piastri, the biggest challenge will be to keep calm and maintain clarity under mounting pressure as the championship heads into its decisive phase.
