A Formula 1 world champion has opened the door to the possibility of retiring from the sport at the end of the 2026 season, with the final decision likely depending on a key factor. Both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have passed the forty-year mark, yet neither seems ready to say goodbye to Formula 1 just yet, with retirement currently postponed until at least the conclusion of 2026. Both drivers want the opportunity to compete with the new-generation cars before calmly evaluating whether continuing their careers is worthwhile. Their contracts with Ferrari and Aston Martin will officially expire at the end of the next season, although options exist to extend them further.
Alonso explains the factors guiding his decision
In a recent interview, Fernando Alonso clarified the factors that will influence his choice. “If we are competitive in 2026, there would certainly be a strong possibility of retiring. Otherwise, it would be difficult to walk away without giving it another try. Naturally, it’s something I’m thinking about, and the decision will also depend on what the team needs. I don’t need to race; I do it only because I want to help Aston Martin become a champion,” the Spanish driver explained.
He continued: “If things go well and I have a competitive car, it could be the right moment to step away from this job. I believe we have everything necessary to succeed under the new regulations. My advantage is having driven in several different eras and categories, which means that next year I will inevitably encounter situations I have already faced in my career and can use that experience to help the team solve any problems.”
