Toto Wolff has finally revealed the reason behind the delay in Mercedes’ official announcement of their driver lineup for the 2026 Formula 1 season. After weeks of speculation and denials, the confirmation has arrived: George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will remain behind the wheel of the Silver Arrows as the sport enters a new technical era.
The Austrian Team Principal explained that the priority was to reach an agreement that satisfied all parties. “Confirming our lineup has always been a question of ‘when,’ not ‘if,’” Toto Wolff said. “We wanted to take the time needed to carefully manage negotiations and ensure that everyone was happy. Now we can focus fully on the future.”
The renewal of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli comes after a season of growth for both drivers: the British driver secured two victories and several podiums, while the young Italian impressed with pole position in the Miami Sprint and his first podium in Montreal. A pairing that, according to Toto Wolff, “represents the perfect balance between experience and emerging talent.”
Focus on 2025 and the 2026 technical revolution
Renewing the drivers is not only an act of trust but also a strategic step in view of the 2026 regulatory overhaul. However, Wolff emphasized that the present remains a priority: “Our immediate goal is to finish the season in second place in the Constructors’ Championship. Then we will look ahead to the new era of Formula 1, ready to write a new chapter.”
Despite past rumors about a potential link to Max Verstappen, Wolff opted for continuity. The Russell–Antonelli duo represents Mercedes’ long-term future, a bet on stability, trust, and shared ambition.
