Toto Wolff finds relief after preseason testing: is Mercedes ready to return to the top of Formula 1 in 2026? The Brackley team has regained confidence ahead of the new 2026 F1 season. After several difficult years under the previous technical regulations, Mercedes showed encouraging signs during the preseason tests, prompting words of relief from Toto Wolff, who is usually known for passing the favorite tag to his rivals.
The Mercedes team principal explained that the W17 has proven competitive right from the first laps, a significant milestone given the struggles experienced under the previous regulations since 2022. With the technical revolution, Mercedes approached development differently than in recent seasons, completing more kilometers than any other team during testing and positioning itself as a strong candidate for a stable return to the top of the grid.
Wolff acknowledged that preparation for the new season was very different compared to previous years. “It’s a relief to start testing and feel that the car behaves well,” he said. “The drivers are quite satisfied with the car. On the timing sheets, we know we’re not far off, and that has been the case over the last three or four years as well.”
The real performance levels, which are likely to continue evolving, will only become clear next week at the season opener in Melbourne. Although Toto Wolff cannot yet pinpoint exactly where Mercedes stands compared to the competition, the Austrian remains confident that the team can fight at the front.
“We don’t really know where the others are, because 10 kilograms of fuel can make a difference of three or three and a half tenths per lap,” he said. “You can make a rough estimate of where everyone is. I’d say there are four teams at the moment, more or less the usual suspects. I think we’re part of the group that can fight for the top positions.”
The 2026 pre-season tests have therefore signaled a potential turning point for Mercedes, with the W17 showing the kind of early consistency and pace that was missing in previous years. While the true hierarchy remains hidden behind fuel loads and engine modes, the renewed optimism within the Brackley camp suggests that the Silver Arrows are firmly back in the hunt for glory as the new technical era begins.
