McLaren has officially kicked off preparations for the new Formula 1 season. Today, the Woking-based team performed the customary Fire Up of the 2026 Mercedes Power Unit that will power their car next year. While the final livery will not be revealed for several more days, the team has offered fans an early glimpse of their new project.
The British outfit faces the challenge of defending the title won last season. Confirming such success after a technical revolution, like the new regulation cycle, is a demanding task, and much will depend on the work Mercedes has done with the engine. The Power Unit is a critical component under the current regulations, and any deficit could be costly.
The Mercedes Power Unit Fire Up
As happens every year during the winter break, McLaren conducted the Fire Up of the Power Unit mounted on the 2026 car. The procedure aims to verify all ignition and assembly processes. The engine will then be tested during the pre-season sessions in Barcelona, where reliability will undoubtedly be the primary focus for all teams.
In the video released by McLaren, fans can hear the distinctive sound of the 2026 Mercedes Power Unit. The full livery of the car will be unveiled on February 9, just two days before the team heads to Bahrain for the second phase of testing. Although McLaren topped the championship last season, it will be the last team to reveal its 2026 car, increasing anticipation to see whether the team can maintain its recent success or encounter new challenges, similar to the regulation changes seen in 2022.
This successful fire up marks a critical psychological and technical milestone for the papaya squad. In a year where engine integration is more complex than ever due to the new rules, hearing the Mercedes unit burst into life without issue provides a much-needed boost to the engineers at MTC. The path to defending their crown is long, but for McLaren, the 2026 journey has officially begun with a loud and clear message to their rivals.
