F1 | McLaren approaches 2026 with caution as new regulations set to change everything. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella urges caution ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Andrea Stella, McLaren team boss, 2024

Despite the major results achieved in recent seasons, the atmosphere within McLaren remains extremely cautious. Andrea Stella, the team principal of the British outfit, has spoken openly about the challenges and uncertainties awaiting Formula 1 from 2026 onwards. The next season will mark the beginning of a completely new era for the sport. The technical regulations will change, the power units will be different, and aerodynamics will also be fundamentally revised. According to Andrea Stella, Formula 1 has never before experienced such a profound transformation across so many areas at the same time.

For this reason, McLaren has no interest in hearing any talk of favourites. Even though the team is coming off a very positive period, no one can say today who will be at the front when the new regulations come into force. Andrea Stella was very clear on this point: “Success in the present guarantees nothing for the future. Every team will be starting almost from zero. The new rules will reshuffle the deck, and anyone who gets even a small detail wrong could pay a very high price.”

Wind tunnel disadvantage

There is also another important factor to consider. McLaren will have less wind tunnel time available compared to some of its rivals. This means fewer aerodynamic tests and fewer opportunities to correct potential mistakes during the development phase. In a period defined by major regulatory change, this limitation could prove significant. For the team principal, the main objective will be to quickly understand where McLaren stands relative to the competition. Only after that assessment will it be possible to truly push hard on development. No blind rush, no promises, just focus, analysis and hard work.

Many times in Formula 1 history, this cautious approach has proven to be the right one. Excessive confidence in Formula 1 often turns into problems, and the past offers plenty of examples. Several dominant teams have struggled badly when faced with a major technical revolution. McLaren is fully aware that it has worked well in recent years. The project is solid and the progress made over time is clear to see. However, that alone is not enough to feel completely secure.

The competition remains extremely strong, and teams like Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari will certainly not be standing still. Each of them has the resources, expertise and ambition to exploit the new regulations to their advantage.

There is also hope that the new rules will succeed in bringing the teams closer together in terms of performance. A more balanced Formula 1 would mean more on-track action and less predictable races, which is exactly what fans and enthusiasts have been waiting for. McLaren has shown that it knows how to operate efficiently and that it has a solid organisational structure, and it is unlikely to be caught unprepared. Nevertheless, caution remains the watchword as the team looks ahead to one of the biggest regulatory shake-ups in the history of the sport.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella is therefore managing expectations for the 2026 season by highlighting the unprecedented scale of the upcoming regulatory changes. By focusing on the reduction in wind tunnel time and the “clean slate” nature of the rules, the team aims to remain grounded despite their recent championship-winning form.
