F1 | Max Verstappen and the title: all possible scenarios starting from the Las Vegas GP. The drivers' championship heats up.

Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, 2025 F1
The drivers’ championship is entering its decisive phase: here’s how Max Verstappen could be eliminated from the title fight and which scenarios remain open.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix could represent a crucial moment in the drivers’ title race. Max Verstappen, currently 49 points behind Lando Norris, risks being definitively eliminated from contention if the mathematics work against him. After returning to form following the summer break, the Dutch champion suffered a setback during the Mexico and São Paulo weekends. There, Lando Norris consolidated his advantage by winning both the sprint and the race, extending his lead over Verstappen to 49 points.

With only 58 points still available between Qatar (Sprint + race) and Abu Dhabi, the mathematics are clear: if Max Verstappen leaves Las Vegas 58 points or more behind Lando Norris, the title becomes unreachable. Even without mathematical elimination, Verstappen risks losing the chance of a potential tie in points, a decisive factor for the final standings.

Possible combinations

Here are the possible combinations that could eliminate Verstappen from the title during Las Vegas:

  • Norris wins (25 points), Verstappen finishes no higher than third (≤15 points) – This scenario has occurred six times this season: Monaco, Austria, Great Britain, Hungary, Mexico, and São Paulo.
  • Norris finishes second (18 points), Verstappen finishes no higher than sixth (≤8 points) – Happened only once at the Spanish GP, with Verstappen penalized from fifth to tenth.
  • Norris finishes third (15 points), Verstappen finishes no higher than seventh (≤6 points) – Has not happened in 2025.
  • Norris finishes fourth (12 points), Verstappen finishes no higher than ninth (≤2 points) – Has not happened in 2025.
  • Norris finishes fifth (10 points), Verstappen finishes tenth or outside points (≤1 point) – Has not happened in 2025.

In all other scenarios, Verstappen will remain in the fight until the Qatar GP.

Norris’ chances and key points

Even if Norris wins in Las Vegas and both Verstappen and Piastri score no points, the title would not yet be mathematically his: the maximum possible advantage would be 49 points, while 58 points remain available. However, Norris could lose the championship lead if Oscar Piastri wins the race and Norris scores only one point or less.

The key points to remember ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix are:

  • Verstappen will be eliminated from the title if he loses 9 points or more to Norris.
  • If Verstappen finishes ahead of Norris, he will remain in contention.
  • If Norris does not finish in the top 5, Verstappen will stay in the championship race.
  • The drivers’ title cannot be decided in Las Vegas: mathematically, everything is postponed to Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The upcoming races will be decisive: every point counts, and every strategy can make the difference. For Verstappen, the Las Vegas Grand Prix therefore represents a crucial crossroads in his pursuit of a fifth consecutive title.
