Sometimes honesty is the key to unlocking success. This is what Lando Norris learned at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The British McLaren driver, after weeks of difficulties and struggling to find the right feel with his MCL39, finally found a breakthrough thanks to a direct conversation with the team following the Singapore GP weekend.
“We had a half-hour debrief and I said, ‘Guys, this is exactly the car I don’t want. We’ll never win like this,’” Lando Norris explained to Sky Sports F1. “This weekend, however, I finally had what I needed. It’s simple: when the car gives me confidence, I can push and make a difference.”
A dominant result
The result was one of the most dominant victories of the season. Lando Norris secured pole position with over two-tenths of a second advantage over Charles Leclerc and won the race with a 30-second margin over the Ferrari driver. It was a clean and commanding success, the largest winning margin in Formula 1 since Red Bull’s dominance in 2023.
By winning in Mexico, Lando Norris reclaimed the Championship lead and admitted he had experienced moments of serious uncertainty in recent weeks. “At the start of the year, I doubted myself. I didn’t want to blame the car, especially when Oscar was winning. But I couldn’t get it to work the way I wanted. Now I’m understanding how to drive it at its best.”
Keeping focus on the Championship
The British driver, now leading the Championship by just one point over Oscar Piastri, remains aware that the fight is far from over: “One good weekend isn’t enough. You need three or four in a row. Max Verstappen is catching up, so I just need to keep my head down and keep working.”
The Mexico GP could therefore mark the true resurgence of the McLaren driver, born from a brutal but honest statement: “This isn’t the car I want.” Today, however, it was precisely that car that brought him back to the top of the world.
