Gabriel Bortoleto, like Andrea Kimi Antonelli, is currently competing in his first season in Formula 1. During a challenging period for the young Italian driver, Bortoleto took the opportunity to offer words of encouragement and support.
While the recent F1 races have been among the strongest of the season for Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, the same cannot be said for Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The Italian driver made the leap into Formula 1 at just 18 years old, replacing Lewis Hamilton in the team. The speed at which Antonelli reached the pinnacle of motorsport meant that expectations for his debut were extremely high.
Antonelli’s first few races in Formula 1 were very promising. At the Miami Grand Prix, he secured his first pole position, and in Canada, he achieved his first career podium by finishing third. However, the subsequent European rounds did not go as smoothly, presenting the young driver with new challenges to overcome.
Support from Russell and the Mercedes team
Both the Mercedes team and his experienced teammate, George Russell, have consistently shown their support for the young rookie. Recently, George Russell spoke out in an interview with Motorsport.com, defending Andrea Kimi Antonelli and highlighting the progress the Italian has made despite the difficult circumstances.
But who better than another rookie can understand the pressures Kimi Antonelli is facing? Gabriel Bortoleto, who raced against Antonelli in Formula 2 before both drivers made the jump to Formula 1, spoke to the media after the Hungarian Grand Prix to express his full support for the Mercedes rookie. He said, “I don’t want to talk about performance or confidence because you never really know what is happening inside the team. You know, there are so many rumours about everything. I feel that Kimi [Antonelli] is an excellent driver, and he has real talent.”
Gabriel Bortoleto added further context: “I raced against him in F2 last year, and he’s now in a very good car, an excellent car, and he also has a very strong teammate, so it’s not easy to be in that position. Of course, I think there have been very high expectations on him this season, and yes, I hope he can regain some of that confidence and then perform well because it’s always great to see other rookies doing well. It shows that our generation is strong.”
Gabriel Bortoleto’s comments highlight the growing respect and recognition within the paddock for Antonelli’s potential, reinforcing that while the season has had its ups and downs, the Italian rookie remains a driver to watch as he continues to develop and adapt to the demands of Formula 1.
