F1 | Kimi Antonelli faces social media backlash after Qatar: profile photo reflects mourning. F1 | Kimi Antonelli responds to online hate with black profile picture after Qatar incident.

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes W16, 2025 F1
Kimi Antonelli received numerous hateful comments following the incident with Lando Norris in Qatar. The Lusail weekend could play a decisive role in the final verdict of the Formula 1 drivers’ championship, which will be decided in Abu Dhabi. McLaren sabotaged itself with a puzzling strategy, allowing Max Verstappen to take full advantage and win the race. It was also a complicated situation for Kimi Antonelli, who, after a mistake on the final lap in Qatar, was flooded with hate across social media platforms.

The Italian driver had been defending fourth place from Lando Norris when, in turn 10, he momentarily lost control of his car and went off track. The British driver was able to overtake and earn two points that could prove decisive in the championship battle.

Antonelli’s reaction on social media

Kimi Antonelli received several hateful messages on his social media profiles following the Qatar GP. In response, the Italian changed his profile picture to a completely black image, symbolizing a state of mourning. The gesture seems intended to highlight the difficult situation he is facing after an entirely unintentional error.

The black profile picture represents this moment of struggle and the perceived death of the values that the sport stands for. This event is part of a broader trend on social media where criticism and insults have become almost normalized. In the hours following the incident and the comments under his recent post, Kimi Antonelli also received several messages of support. A similar episode had occurred previously after his collision with Charles Leclerc in the Dutch Grand Prix.

Red Bull figures partly responsible

Contributing to this situation were comments from Red Bull insiders. The insinuations by Helmut Marko and Gianpiero Lambiase suggesting a supposed deliberate manoeuvre only added fuel to the fire. Situations like these should have no place in Formula 1, which has historically united fans regardless of team colours.

Whatever happens in Abu Dhabi, the events of Qatar have once again highlighted the dark side of modern fandom, where a teenager making a split-second error under huge pressure is met with vitriol instead of understanding.
