George Russell has spoken candidly about his current relationship with Max Verstappen, admitting that things between the two drivers are far from friendly, but also expressing openness to the idea of becoming teammates in the future. In an interview with The Telegraph, the Mercedes driver discussed his relationship with the four-time world champion from Red Bull, with whom he had a heated verbal clash at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
The breaking point between them came at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, when Verstappen received a one-place grid penalty that handed Russell pole position. Despite Verstappen’s eventual victory in the race, tensions boiled over afterward. The Dutch driver accused Russell of having “convinced the stewards” to impose the penalty and said during the post-race press conference that he had “lost all respect” for him.
“It was really disappointing. I think there’s respect among us in this sport, but I had never seen someone try to harm another driver in that way,” Verstappen said at the time, still irritated by what had happened during the stewards’ meeting.
Russell’s response came a few days later at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where the British driver didn’t hold back. “I find his comments quite ironic, considering he’s the same one who says ‘I’ll put you in the wall.’ For me, that’s unacceptable. He’s crossed the line, and someone needs to say enough is enough,” Russell declared, also referring to Verstappen’s past on-track incidents.
Russell and Verstappen as teammates? The Mercedes driver wouldn’t mind
The Mercedes driver criticized Max Verstappen for using “unnecessary anger and a mindset close to aggression,” citing the famous 2021 Silverstone crash with Lewis Hamilton as an example of his rival’s overly combative approach.
Almost a year after those controversies, George Russell has reflected on his current relationship with Verstappen, admitting that the two only exchange brief greetings and rarely speak. “We say hello, but we don’t really talk. We don’t ignore each other, but it’s not a big deal. I don’t lose sleep over it, and I’m sure he doesn’t either,” George Russell explained.
“Life’s short, we’re adults, and you learn from every experience. You don’t need to be best friends to be teammates. Senna and Prost weren’t, and yet they finished first and second. Lewis and Nico [Rosberg] were the same,” he continued.
The British driver also mentioned the tense dynamic between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in 2007, adding: “Lewis should have won that world championship. It proves you don’t need friendship, only mutual respect.”
Despite acknowledging the tension, George Russell did not hide his admiration for Max Verstappen and his curiosity to face him under equal conditions. “Max is an incredible driver, there’s no denying that. But that’s exactly why I’d like to challenge him in the same team. All of us believe we’re the best, and that’s what makes Formula 1 battles so fascinating,” Russell said.
The Mercedes driver, known for his composure and consistency on track, seems ready to move past personal disputes to focus on sporting rivalry. With Mercedes and Red Bull continuing to fight for the top positions, the prospect of a direct confrontation between Russell and Verstappen remains one of the most intriguing possibilities for the coming seasons.
