Max Verstappen secured an incredible podium finish at the Brazil Grand Prix, turning what seemed like a disastrous weekend into one of the most impressive comebacks of the season. The Dutch driver shared his thoughts after an extraordinary recovery drive.
Heading into the weekend, things looked bleak for Verstappen. During qualifying, he was unable to make it past Q1, leaving him well down the order. To make matters worse, he was forced to start the race from the pit lane. Despite the setback, Max Verstappen displayed exceptional pace and flawless strategy execution, climbing through the field to finish third at Interlagos.
The opening laps of the race were chaotic, with two early neutralizations — one following Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash and another after Charles Leclerc’s elimination. In the midst of this early drama, Verstappen was forced to return to the pits to replace a punctured white compound tire that had been fitted for the start. From there, the Red Bull driver structured his race into four stints: beginning on the hard tires, switching to two sets of mediums, and ending with a final stint on softs to defend against the Mercedes drivers in the closing stages.
“I think it was quite a lively race,” Max Verstappen said. “Starting from the pit lane meant there was a lot of action — I had to make a lot of overtakes. During every stint it was tough to manage the traffic, and honestly, I never expected to finish on the podium after starting from the pit lane. It’s an incredible result for us. I’m very happy about it and very proud of everyone in the team.”
Reflecting on the challenges of the weekend, Max Verstappen added: “Yesterday was really tough for us, but we never give up. We always try to improve, to find more pace, and luckily today we managed to get it back. I was also trying to make my way through the field as quickly as possible because you don’t want to lose too much time, but it was never straightforward. Finishing just ten seconds behind the race leader is honestly unbelievable for us.”
With his third-place finish, Max Verstappen once again demonstrated his ability to recover from adversity, combining skill, pace, and determination to turn a seemingly lost cause into a remarkable podium in São Paulo.
