During the FIA end-of-season awards ceremony, the prize for the 2025 Formula 1 overtake of the year was also presented. The winning moment came from an episode that took place in Italy earlier in the season.
The FIA prize-giving ceremony once again saw Max Verstappen take centre stage. Not because of his second place in the drivers’ championship, but due to his victory in the category for the best overtake of the 2025 Formula 1 season. The move in question dates back to the opening phase of the year at Imola.
On the night of the FIA awards, a special segment was dedicated to reliving all the overtakes that kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the season. Formula 1 already selects the best overtake of each month based on fan votes, but the final decision rests with the FIA, which shortlisted three of the most thrilling manoeuvres of the year.
The shortlisted overtakes
Three moves made it through to the final selection. The first was Lando Norris’ aggressive defence against Oscar Piastri in Austria. The two title contenders arrived side by side under braking for Turn 3, with Oscar Piastri switching lines and attempting an outside move again at Turn 4. Lando Norris successfully defended his position and went on to win the race.
The second contender was Max Verstappen’s overtake on Oscar Piastri at Imola, completed at the first corner with a bold move around the outside. An attack that allowed him to take the lead and control the race from start to finish.
The third nomination was Oliver Bearman’s manoeuvre in Mexico. Taking advantage of the chaos created by the duel between Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, the young Haas driver completed three overtakes in just a few corners, climbing from seventh to fourth place.
“Action of the year” award
In the end, the overtake of the year award went to Max Verstappen for his decisive move at Imola. Starting from second place behind pole-sitter Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen waited for the right moment at the beginning of the opening lap and, with a committed move around the outside at the Tamburello chicane, slipped past the Australian’s McLaren to take control of the race.
The manoeuvre transformed the outcome of the Grand Prix and stands as one of the Dutch driver’s standout moments of the 2025 season. Below is the link to relive the spectacular move by the driver born in 1997.
