Carlos Sainz, the experienced Spanish Formula 1 driver who currently races for Williams but was Lando Norris’s teammate at McLaren during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, has publicly expressed strong admiration and respect for the young British driver. At the same time, Sainz did not hesitate to criticize those within the sport and media who exploit Norris’s openness and genuine personality as a way to undermine him.
Speaking during an interview with BBC 5 Live Sport, Carlos Sainz explained, “Lando opens up to the media and to people more than any other driver on the current Formula 1 grid. He is exceptionally transparent and authentic about his thoughts and emotions, and because of that, people sometimes use his sincerity against him.” Sainz continued, “He is 100% genuine in his feelings and his opinions, but unfortunately, this honesty is often turned into a weapon that works against him. I believe that the other 19 drivers experience the same doubts and self-criticism internally, but they prefer to keep those thoughts private and not share them publicly with the media.” – the former Ferrari driver pointed out.
Lando Norris recently emerged as the winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who currently leads the championship standings. The English driver entered the summer break trailing Piastri by just 9 points, after a season marked by both notable highs and frustrating lows. Norris has struggled with initial setup issues related to the front end of the McLaren car, which affected his consistency, and has made some mistakes in qualifying sessions and races alike. However, despite these setbacks, Norris has demonstrated impressive resilience and racecraft, securing dominant victories in Austria and Great Britain, as well as achieving a recent pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz remains confident in Norris’s potential and ability to succeed at the highest level of motorsport. “In terms of raw speed and natural talent,” Sainz said, “I am absolutely 100% certain that Lando Norris has what it takes to win a Formula 1 World Championship in the future. However, Formula 1 is not just about speed; it also demands a degree of luck, mental strength, and the right circumstances. It is essential to be in the right place at the right time with the right car to convert talent into championship victories. If Norris does not manage to win this year, he will undoubtedly have many more chances ahead of him. He is still very young and has at least 10 to 15 years of potential racing career ahead. The raw potential is unquestionably there.”
This endorsement from Carlos Sainz, who himself is a respected figure in Formula 1 with years of top-level experience, highlights the growing recognition of Lando Norris as one of the brightest and most promising talents on the Formula 1 grid today. It also emphasizes the challenges that come with being open and authentic in a highly competitive and media-driven sport like Formula 1, where every word and gesture is closely scrutinized and sometimes used against the drivers.
