Aston Martin is currently facing a difficult period, and the forecasts for the upcoming races, made by Fernando Alonso after the Baku Grand Prix, are far from encouraging.
The Baku weekend proved somewhat challenging for both Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso. Both drivers were eliminated in Q2, finishing in eleventh and fourteenth positions respectively. For the Spanish driver, the race got off to a rocky start. Oscar Piastri’s false start also misled Alonso, who was starting directly behind the Australian driver. While the current championship leader did not have the opportunity to serve a penalty, as he crashed after just a few corners, Alonso was handed a 5-second penalty.
For Fernando Alonso, however, serving the 5-second penalty during his pit stop did not impact his final result; instead, other factors determined the outcome.
Worrying statements
A despondent Fernando Alonso highlighted at the end of the Baku Grand Prix that Aston Martin is not in a strong position. Even at Monza, the Silverstone-based team failed to achieve the desired results. In fact, Alonso was forced to retire due to a suspension failure. In Baku, both drivers finished the race outside the points.
Alonso told the media in Azerbaijan: “I reacted to Oscar [Piastri]’s movement, and unfortunately we moved before the lights went out. I don’t think it changed much in the race result because we were very, very slow today, and we need to improve for the next race.”
The goal is to make progress in the coming races, but Alonso’s statements did not convey much optimism: “I think we have a car with certain characteristics, not suited for Monza, not suited for Baku, and probably not suited for Las Vegas or Mexico either, so I expect that in Las Vegas and Mexico we will be at the back of the grid.”
