Red Bull is already ready for F1 2026: at Barcelona, the Austrian team will arrive with the best possible car, without waiting for the Bahrain tests. This is a well-planned move to maximize learning about the car and confirm the upgrade strategy without losing valuable time. Extra attention is being given to the hybrid part of the Power Unit, aimed at optimizing the energy recovery from the MGU-K motor generator.
F1 2026, Red Bull feels ready for the new regulatory cycle
Red Bull wants to fly. True to the energy drink slogan, the Milton Keynes team has no intention of slowing down. There has been plenty of talk about the new engine, with some suggesting that a rookie manufacturer may not be able to produce a competitive power unit. This should be taken with caution, as the powertrain department employs at least 150 engineers previously with Honda.
Contrary to what has been said, our editorial team has learned that the issues Red Bull faced over the past year and a half have been resolved, and the Austrian team is confident in the work done in this area. The wait for the new technical regulations is almost over, and we will soon have answers. Beyond this, Laurent Mekies’ team remains highly confident about the future.
Newey is no longer with the team, and in the latest news, Will Courtenay is also leaving Verstappen’s team to move to Woking, following in the footsteps of Rob Marshall. Courtenay will take on the role of sporting director after 15 years as head of strategy. This is a manageable loss, as he will be replaced by none other than Hannah Schmitz.
Red Bull: extra study on the hybrid system to maximize energy recovery
The Austrian team is well aware of the importance of energy recovery in the new Power Units. Just this morning, our editorial team detailed one of the biggest challenges: the use of the MGU-K motor generator in F1 2026 in relation to braking. It needs to be perfectly balanced to avoid incorrect brake system operating temperatures.
How this is managed will significantly affect the competitive balance. For Red Bull, one of the most important aspects will be long runs over 300 kilometers. A constant electrical boost will be necessary to maintain maximum performance. That is why free practice sessions will be crucial to understand how to deploy hybrid support most effectively.
Tracks are not all the same, and depending on the layout, there will be large differences in how this critical technical factor is interpreted. The team led by Pierre Waché has dedicated significant time to this, with the clear goal of extracting every detail that could positively impact performance. Naturally, the core capabilities of the Power Unit will remain decisive.
However, the engineers handling software and energy management will have an even greater influence. Therefore, the Barcelona tests will be crucial to collect precise data: on one side, the grip level of the new Pirelli tires to provide clear braking references, and on the other, the actual aerodynamic load generated by the car to calculate drag.
Red Bull’s aggressive approach for Barcelona: RB22 at full potential
The four-day closed-door testing at Montmeló will also be used to test engine reliability and other mechanical components. Ferrari has decided to use its test time cautiously, believing that only in Bahrain will the right benchmarks exist to validate the car as a whole. This may lead to aerodynamic differences between the two test sessions.
In contrast, Red Bull will arrive at the Catalan track with the final version of its car. The RB22 – as it is expected to be called – aims to start the season with a solid foundation on which to build the future. This does not mean that updates to software or aerodynamics will not occur before the first Grand Prix. What is certain is that the Austrian car will arrive ready to perform.
This strategy avoids wasting time examining the car, as the goal is to continuously upgrade it, especially during the first six months. This appears to be the most efficient approach for the energy drink team, confident that arriving in Barcelona fully prepared is undoubtedly the smartest move. We eagerly await to see if this theory will be confirmed.
