F1 2026: McLaren and Lando Norris nominated for World Team and Breakthrough Star. Lando Norris and McLaren have been nominated for the 2026 Laureus Awards.

Lando Norris, McLaren, 2026 F1

After their historic achievements in the 2025 Formula 1 season, McLaren and Lando Norris have received a prestigious nomination that highlights their talent, determination, and extraordinary performance on the track.

Norris and McLaren’s Laureus nominations

The 2025 season was a landmark year for both Lando Norris and McLaren. The British driver clinched the Formula 1 World Championship in a thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi, while his team secured their second consecutive Constructors’ Championship. Now, both have been nominated for the esteemed Laureus Awards, celebrating not only their on-track accomplishments but also the perseverance and skill that defined their unforgettable season.

Lando Norris, who became the 35th Formula 1 World Champion after narrowly beating four-time champion Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi by just two points, is nominated for the “World Breakthrough Star of the Year” award. His competitors include footballer Desire Doue, tennis player Joao Fonseca, Canadian basketball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, darts world champion Luke Littler, and swimmer Zidi Yu.

Meanwhile, McLaren, winner of their second consecutive Constructors’ Championship, is nominated for the “World Team of the Year” award. The papaya team will face stiff competition from top international squads, including the European champion England women’s football team, the European Ryder Cup team, India’s women’s cricket World Cup champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder women’s basketball team, and Paris Saint-Germain, winners of the 2025 UEFA Champions League.

No F1 driver for World Sportsperson of the Year

Notably, no Formula 1 driver has been nominated for the “World Sportsperson of the Year” award this year. Past F1 winners of this prestigious award include Michael Schumacher (2002, 2004), Sebastian Vettel (2014), Lewis Hamilton (2020), and Max Verstappen (2022).

The winners of the 2026 Laureus Awards will be announced at a special ceremony in Madrid on April 20. By that time, the 2026 Formula 1 season will already be underway, giving fans their first glimpse of whether McLaren and Lando Norris can repeat their extraordinary double triumph from 2025.
