George Russell showed calmness and confidence ahead of Formula 1’s return to action, scheduled for the Miami race weekend on May 3.
Russell heading to Miami
Formula 1 is recharging its batteries—quite literally—ahead of its return to the track at the beginning of May. For George Russell, this represents the perfect opportunity to put behind him a frustrating race at Suzuka, where he crossed the line in fourth place following a series of unfortunate events that compromised his overall result.
In Japan, the #63 lost the lead of the World Championship, handing it over to his teammate Kimi Antonelli. Russell has clearly understood that he can no longer underestimate the young 2006-born talent and now feels fully prepared for the Miami weekend—one of the first circuits where the Italian driver showcased his potential, securing pole position in the 2025 Sprint session.
Russell’s comments
“I feel great heading into Miami. It’s been an incredible start to the 2026 season for Mercedes, and I’ve personally started very strongly as well. Suzuka was a challenging race for me, but the season is very long and we have a very strong package at our disposal—that’s the most important thing,” said the British driver.
“I feel confident, this break has been a good way to rest and I’m ready to go again,” he added. “I really like Miami as a track—it’s fast and flowing, and it offers good overtaking opportunities. We’ll see what happens weather-wise: in previous years, storms have just missed the circuit. That’s a factor that could play a role.”
George Russell’s outlook on the Miami Grand Prix therefore reflects a balanced approach to the 2026 title race, recognizing both the strength of the Mercedes W17 and the rising threat from within his own garage. By focusing on the longevity of the season and his affinity for the Florida track, Russell aims to turn his confidence into a performance that can shift the championship momentum back in his favor.
