Explained: why Franco Colapinto received a start penalty in F1 Australian GP. Franco Colapinto avoided a first-lap crash in the 2026 Australian GP.

Franco Colapinto, Alpine, 2026 F1

The incredible reflexes at the start saved Franco Colapinto from his first crash of the year with Liam Lawson, but a penalty spoiled the debut of his 2026 season. The start of Colapinto’s race at the Australian Grand Prix delivered a moment of pure adrenaline. As the red lights went out, Lawson’s car barely moved off the grid, creating an unexpected obstacle. Thanks to the Argentine driver’s lightning-fast reflexes, he avoided the collision and saved a race that seemed over after just a few meters.

However, following the heart-stopping start, the FIA handed down an unwelcome penalty. According to the official FIA statement, the sanction was related to a violation that occurred just before the “start.” The specific rule breached was B5.5.5 (paragraph a, point 1) of the sporting regulations.

What happened

Shortly before the formation lap, a mechanic touched Colapinto’s car. By that time, the countdown had ended, meaning no contact with the vehicle was allowed. This led to a Stop and Go penalty. Under this sanction, the driver must return to the pits and keep the car stationary in his pit box for 5 or 10 seconds. After the time is served, he may rejoin the race.

The regulation B5.5.5 paragraph a) states: “When the 15-second signal (before the formation lap) is given, all personnel must have already left the grid, taking all equipment with them.” Point 1 is even clearer: “If a mechanic touches the car or any equipment remains attached after this time limit, the driver must start from the pit lane.” Colapinto failed to comply, and after careful review by the stewards, the 10-second penalty was applied on lap 10. Those precious seconds proved costly, turning a heroic start into a forced stop, leaving him at the back of the field and forced to fight his way up the order.

Ultimately, there is disappointment over a performance that deserved a different ending, especially when compared to the 10th place finish of the other Alpine driven by Pierre Gasly. On one hand, Colapinto’s lightning-fast reflexes saved the Enstone team (and Lawson’s car) from a certain first-lap impact. On the other hand, a simple pre-start oversight at the pits ruined the start of his 2026 season opener.
