The French racing driver Esteban Ocon, now competing for the Haas Formula 1 Team, shared his thoughts ahead of the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Reflecting on his strong history at the iconic Belgian circuit, the Frenchman underlined the strategic complexity and unpredictable weather that often characterise the race weekend in the Ardennes.
Consistent Top-10 Finishes at Spa
The Haas Formula 1 team is preparing for the upcoming round of the championship at Spa-Francorchamps, a legendary and challenging circuit that holds particular significance for Esteban Ocon. The French driver made his Formula 1 debut at this very venue back in the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix, driving for the now-defunct Manor Racing team. With the exception of that first outing, Esteban Ocon has consistently finished within the top ten at Spa in the years that followed, demonstrating both pace and precision at the demanding Belgian circuit. His best result at Spa to date remains a fifth-place finish, achieved during the 2020 edition of the race while he was driving for Renault.
A Sprint Weekend with Unpredictable Weather
Spa-Francorchamps is known for its sudden weather changes and long lap distance, factors that make every session more unpredictable and tactically significant. This year’s Belgian Grand Prix weekend will feature the Sprint race format, adding an additional layer of strategy and pressure to the event. Esteban Ocon is optimistic that these elements may work in his favour:
“I’m really looking forward to going to Spa-Francorchamps,” he explained. “There’s always a chance of rain at this track, and that can create new opportunities. With the Sprint format, everything is more intense and challenging because Spa is such a long circuit. You don’t get many laps in each session, so Free Practice 1 becomes extremely important for collecting as much data as possible. Every small detail needs to be perfect to get through both qualifying sessions cleanly and to fight for points in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix.”
Ocon hopes to bounce back after a difficult outing at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where contact with his teammate, British rookie driver Oliver Bearman, compromised his race. The Belgian weekend represents a chance for redemption and to return to the top ten.
Oliver Bearman Ready for Spa Return with New Updates
Ocon’s teammate at Haas, Oliver Bearman, is also looking forward to racing at Spa-Francorchamps. The young British driver has previously enjoyed success at this venue in the junior categories, making it a special circuit in his development as a racer. Bearman notably won the Formula 3 Sprint Race at Spa and took pole position in the 2023 Formula 2 qualifying session.
“I’m really excited to be going back to Spa,” Bearman said ahead of the event. “It’s a fantastic track, full of history and excitement. It’s our first Sprint weekend in quite a while, which is always enjoyable because it means more action and more racing. I’m hoping that the latest update on our car performs as well here as it did at Silverstone, and that we can enjoy a clean and competitive weekend.”
The Belgian Grand Prix will also mark the third Sprint weekend of the 2025 Formula 1 season, following previous Sprint events held in Shanghai and Miami. For Haas, it presents a new opportunity to test recent upgrades and improve their performance before the summer break.
