Esteban Ocon confirms he is a ‘free agent’ for 2027 as Haas future remains uncertain

Esteban Ocon, Haas, 2026 F1

Esteban Ocon has confirmed that he is currently a “free agent” for the 2027 Formula 1 season, with his Haas contract due to expire at the end of the year and his future with the American team increasingly uncertain. The French driver has also revealed that he is speaking to other Formula 1 teams as the number of available seats for next season continues to shrink.

Esteban Ocon arrived in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix sounding more like an NBA player entering free agency than a Formula 1 driver with his future secured. The comparison has nothing to do with his clothing, but rather with the term “free agent” itself – a description that accurately reflects his current contractual position.

Esteban Ocon confirms ‘free agent’ status for F1 2027

In the NBA, free agents are players without a contract who are searching for a new deal. Esteban Ocon is set to find himself in much the same position at the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with his agreement with Haas due to expire.

Asked about his future ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon said: “At the moment, I’m definitely a free agent for next year. There are things we’re discussing that are out of my control, and there are other topics that are also out of my control. So I will keep pushing until the end of the season and then we’ll see how it goes.”

The Frenchman has also confirmed that he is in contact with other Formula 1 teams. His objective remains to stay on the grid, although the number of realistic openings for 2027 is reducing quickly.

Asked directly whether his free-agent status meant he was talking to rival teams, Esteban Ocon replied: “Yes, of course I’m talking to other teams as well.” When questioned on whether he could still remain with Haas in 2027, his answer was brief: “We’ll see.”

The uncertainty comes during a difficult season for Esteban Ocon, who currently sits behind team-mate Oliver Bearman in the championship. The latest Formula 1 driver standings underline the challenging campaign Haas has endured as the midfield development battle has intensified.

Haas evaluates possible Esteban Ocon replacements for 2027

The door at Haas therefore appears, if not completely closed, at least partly shut. The American team has been evaluating several potential options for its future and has used recent Testing of Previous Cars sessions to give mileage to a number of very different but highly rated drivers.

Leonardo Fornaroli is one of those candidates. The Italian is part of McLaren’s driver programme and is eager to earn his opportunity on the Formula 1 grid after establishing himself as one of the most promising young drivers outside the championship.

Haas has also tested Rafael Câmara, the Brazilian Ferrari Driver Academy prospect who is regarded as another strong candidate for a Formula 1 opportunity. The third name under consideration is Ryo Hirakawa, the experienced Japanese driver who competes for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship and has already completed productive testing work with Ayao Komatsu’s Haas team.

Leonardo Fornaroli, Rafael Câmara and Ryo Hirakawa emerge as Haas options

All three drivers offer Haas a different profile. Leonardo Fornaroli represents a young driver already integrated into McLaren’s development structure, while Rafael Câmara combines youth with the backing of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Ryo Hirakawa, meanwhile, offers considerably more experience through his endurance racing career and his existing relationship with Toyota.

The eventual choice of a replacement for Esteban Ocon is expected to come from this group of candidates, with each presenting a credible case for a Haas seat from 2027. Oliver Bearman is also central to the team’s longer-term planning, with the Briton continuing to establish himself in Formula 1. More coverage of his season can be found in the Oliver Bearman section.

Esteban Ocon may need a reserve role to remain in Formula 1

For Esteban Ocon, the options for securing another full-time Formula 1 seat next season currently appear limited. With several teams already moving to define their 2027 line-ups and the number of vacancies decreasing, remaining on the grid as a race driver could prove difficult.

A reserve-driver position may therefore become the most realistic way for Esteban Ocon to remain closely involved in Formula 1 if no full-time seat becomes available. Such a role would allow him to stay within the paddock and remain ready should another opportunity emerge, rather than stepping away from the championship entirely.

For now, however, Esteban Ocon intends to concentrate on the remaining races of the 2026 season while discussions continue behind the scenes. His future remains unresolved, and the final decision over Haas’s 2027 line-up has yet to be made.
