Kimi Antonelli is set to begin his first F1 season in 2025, racing alongside George Russell. The big question surrounding the Briton is whether he will establish himself as the team’s leader or be overshadowed by the rookie.
George Russell addressed the topic himself, sharing his thoughts on rookies in general while also reflecting on the skills he has gained over his six years in F1 (2025 will mark his seventh season).
During pre-season testing in Bahrain, drivers will provide feedback on the car to make any necessary adjustments ahead of the Championship. For the first time in years, Mercedes will no longer have the input of veteran Lewis Hamilton, one of the most experienced drivers in the paddock.
Instead, the team will rely on George Russell and newcomer Kimi Antonelli. Speaking about his new teammate, George Russell said, “He’ll definitely keep me on my toes, there’s no doubt about that.”
What makes Antonelli a potential challenge for a more experienced driver?
According to Russell, it’s not about pure speed. “When I think back to when I was 18… I don’t feel any faster today than I did back then.”
The real difference lies in the maturity George Russell has developed over the years. “Today, I have more experience, I know how to handle pressure in Formula 1, and I know how to manage a team of over 2,000 people. When it comes to speed, you either have it or you don’t. And I think he has it.”
The Briton concluded by highlighting a key factor that could work in the young Italian’s favor—his hunger for success. “I can’t wait to see what he can do and achieve. You should never underestimate young drivers coming into the team. When I think back to that age, you have a lot of fire inside you.”
