Max Verstappen’s Masterpiece
Starting from 17th on the grid and securing a win after a challenging comeback in tough weather conditions: Max Verstappen’s performance at the recent São Paulo Grand Prix at the 4.309-kilometre Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Brazil won over everyone, from his fans to those less fond of the reigning champion’s personality, highlighting his talent and skill.
Comparisons with the Greats
This performance sparked comparisons with other great champions of the past, including Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher—two drivers that David Coulthard had the chance to know both on and off the track. The Scot, who replaced “Magic” Senna after his tragic passing at Williams in 1994, later became a rival of the former Ferrari star before ending his career in 2009 and then becoming a Red Bull ambassador.
David Coulthard’s Reflections
Speaking on the podcast *Formula for Success*, David Coulthard didn’t just praise Verstappen for his win; he also looked back on what drew him to the sport in the first place, inspired by Max Verstappen’s race: “These are the things that, when I think about it, I believe are why I fell in love with this sport. It was about wanting to see excellence, seeing people do things that made you think, ‘That’s incredible,’ but it happened.”
David Coulthard added that the Dutchman’s victory at the Interlagos circuit also silenced some media criticism, especially from the British press, after what happened in the Mexico City Grand Prix: “It probably calmed a lot of the accusations and frustration or anger—whatever term you want to use—that had been building up against him. Max is his own man, says what he wants, doesn’t dance to anyone’s tune, and that’s divisive.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
