David Coulthard has described Williams’ 2026 Formula 1 season as effectively a “write-off” after a disastrous first half left the Grove team with only 11 points from the opening 11 races. Williams has fallen to ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, a dramatic reversal after finishing fifth in 2025, but the former Williams driver still believes the team can eventually recover.
Coulthard accepts that Williams made mistakes with its 2026 car, although he believes there are mitigating circumstances behind the team’s difficulties. Delayed information from external suppliers forced Williams to make late internal changes, contributing to a car that arrived both late and overweight and ultimately caused the team to miss the opening pre-season test.
David Coulthard explains what went wrong for Williams in 2026
Speaking to RacingNews365.com, Coulthard was direct when assessing how Williams ended up in such a difficult position.
“Yes, they got it wrong,” the former Williams driver said. “But the mitigating circumstance, as we learn more, is that they got a lot of information from outside suppliers late. That forced them to recalibrate internally what they were building, and the result came out late and heavy. And ‘late and heavy’ is not a good combination: they missed the first test.”
The problems have defined the opening half of a season that Williams had entered with considerably greater expectations. After taking fifth in the 2025 Constructors’ Championship, the team hoped to build on that momentum under Formula 1’s new technical regulations. Instead, the FW48 has struggled with weight and overall performance, issues also highlighted in GP-News.net’s Williams 2026 mid-season assessment.
Coulthard: ‘The comeback will be sweet’
Despite the scale of Williams’ problems, Coulthard remains optimistic about the longer-term outlook and believes the team has an important strength in its driver pairing of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.
“The comeback will be sweet. They have two fantastic drivers. And yes, maybe they don’t have many points, but for Williams fans around the world it has been a disappointment. This year will be a bit of a ‘write-off’ in that respect.”
Williams’ position after 11 races leaves it a long way from repeating last year’s result, with the latest Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship standings illustrating just how far the team has fallen during the opening half of 2026.
Williams expected to shift focus towards 2027
Coulthard sees little chance of Williams recovering sufficiently during the second half of the campaign to return to fifth place unless the team produces an exceptional development step.
“They’re not going to achieve fifth unless they unleash some amazing upgrade, and given that we’re already in the summer break, I’m not sure they will. They might bring another upgrade this year, but otherwise all the focus will be on next year.”
That outlook increases the importance of Williams’ longer-term rebuilding programme under James Vowles. The team is continuing to invest in the infrastructure and technology required to accelerate its recovery, including a wider modernisation effort that has seen James Vowles outline Williams’ growing use of artificial intelligence across its organisation.
The difficult campaign could also have consequences beyond pure car development. Carlos Sainz’s future has become an increasingly important topic as Williams attempts to convince him that the project can recover, with the team reportedly prepared to make a significant commitment to retain the Spaniard as Sainz evaluates his options beyond 2026.
For Coulthard, however, the current disappointment does not mean Williams’ long-term recovery has failed. The 2026 season may have become one to endure rather than celebrate, but with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon still giving the team a strong driver pairing, he believes the eventual return towards the front could make the present difficulties easier to accept in hindsight.
