David Coulthard gave Lando Norris advice on how to recover for the championship fight, highlighting traits of the champions he worked with: here are his words.
After the incident caused by Lando Norris in the final laps of the Canadian GP, David Coulthard offered the Brit some advice.
Norris had already apologized over the radio to his teammate Oscar Piastri for his overly optimistic overtaking attempt that led to his retirement. The McLaren No.4 immediately took responsibility for the incident, stating that “it was stupid of me.”
Just before the chequered flag in Montreal, the Brit saw a gap that ultimately wasn’t there, and for that, he didn’t hold back in his self-criticism after the race.
This isn’t the first time Norris has publicly criticized himself. The McLaren driver has also spoken on several occasions about the mental challenges he faces, and according to David Coulthard, acting this way hasn’t done him any favours.
Coulthard’s statements
The former F1 driver and 13-time Grand Prix winner, David Coulthard, offered Norris some advice. “I think everyone should do what makes sense for themselves. But, if you ask me, the less you say, the less you have to explain.”
“As a driver fighting for the world title, you need to manage your energy carefully,” added the former driver. “If you start each day with a full battery and spend 20 percent of your energy explaining things and 80 percent driving, then the other guy with the same talent has an advantage. If he only uses 5 percent to talk, because he’s obliged to by the FIA, then he has 95 percent of his energy available for driving.”
The Scotsman then pointed out that efficient time management is a distinctive trait of the world champions he worked with.
“I never won a world title, but I gained a lot of experience and knowledge about how various world champions work. And they all used their time very, very efficiently,” concluded Coulthard.
