The situation at McLaren, with both drivers fighting for the World Championship, has become one of the main talking points in the Formula 1 paddock. Claire Williams, the former team principal of Williams and daughter of the team’s founder, has shared her view in support of the Woking squad, stressing how difficult it is to manage moments like these.
“Racing is a bit crazy”
“It’s not an easy job. I think at McLaren, Lando and Oscar are two very calm drivers, but at the same time extremely competitive,” Claire Williams said.
“They have both fought hard to get into Formula 1, and they have both dreamed for many, many years of winning the drivers’ championship. So they will challenge each other on track, but controlling that challenge is certainly not an easy task.”
Inside McLaren, the team has adopted what they call the “papaya rules,” a friendly way of saying “fight, but don’t crash.” These rules were introduced specifically to avoid any sense of favouritism, as both drivers have the talent and the opportunity to fight for the title. However, throughout the season, some team orders and on-track clashes between the two have fuelled the debate — and at times, those papaya rules have been ignored.
“You need to have well-prepared plans for every Grand Prix, conversations with the drivers to keep the fight clean on track. But, you know, racing is a bit crazy. You never know what will happen when the lights go out. It’s not easy to manage, and we can look at the situation on Monday and ask ourselves ‘why did they make that decision, why did they do that?’” the former team boss continued.
“All I can say is that the McLaren pit wall always has the best intentions and always tries to do what’s best for its drivers every Sunday,” she concluded.
There are now only three races left in the season: Lando Norris appears to be the favourite, while Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen are struggling due to pressure and an inconsistent car.
