Red Bull disappointed
Max Verstappen and Red Bull leadership could have expected everything from their home race except a disastrous zero-point result. The Dutch champion was hit at the third corner by an error from Kimi Antonelli and had to retire, while Yuki Tsunoda did even worse, finishing last two laps behind the winner.
Red Bull hadn’t recorded a double zero in 77 races since the opening Bahrain GP of 2022. Now, the driver’s championship path looks steeper for Max Verstappen, who trails Oscar Piastri by 61 points. As for the constructors’ title, it’s out of reach, with McLaren leading by 255 points.
Christian Horner explains
Christian Horner was asked to explain Red Bull’s lack of progress in front of the press, and his defense was quite heartfelt: “We still have a strong team. Unfortunately, the performance we hoped for didn’t happen. We’re at the end of this regulation cycle, but we’re still basically the same team that designed the car 18 months ago that won every race except one. We haven’t suddenly become idiots.” – the Red Bull team boss pointed out.
Inevitable was the question about Max Verstappen and Mercedes rumors. Christian Horner was sharp: “They have their own problems; today, I think they finished 60 seconds behind the winner. We focus on ourselves. We know Max’s situation and what’s in his contract. Beyond that, it’s just rumors spread by the other side…” – the Red Bull team principal concluded at the end of the Austrian Grand Prix.
