Christian Horner is reportedly very close to a return to Formula 1, but not with Red Bull and not with Ferrari. Instead, his future could lie with Alpine. Confirmation has now arrived from the Netherlands, where respected sources suggest that the English manager is approaching a decisive moment in his potential comeback. After months of intense rumours, which had also linked him to Ferrari, the focus now appears to be firmly on the French outfit.
Christian Horner wants to return to Formula 1, but he intends to do so on his own terms. Alpine, currently guided by Italian entrepreneur Flavio Briatore, is eager to re-establish itself as a leading force in F1 after several difficult seasons. The French team believes that bringing in a proven winner like Horner could be the key to reversing its decline and returning to the front of the grid.
This scenario would represent fertile ground for the British manager, who has built his reputation on taking teams to the top. Horner is known for his ability to reshape organisations, and the idea of taking a struggling team and turning it into a race-winning operation strongly appeals to him. Such a move would be another remarkable achievement in a career already filled with historic successes.
Christian Horner left Red Bull in July after an extraordinary 20-year spell with the Milton Keynes-based team. During those two decades, he won everything there was to win, overseeing two dominant eras in modern Formula 1 history. The first came with Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013, followed by the Max Verstappen era from 2021 to 2024. Those periods of dominance cemented Horner’s status as one of the most successful team principals in the sport.
The separation from Red Bull last summer came after a turbulent period marked by legal and off-track issues involving the English manager. Despite that, Horner now appears ready to re-enter the Formula 1 paddock, while Alpine are equally determined to return to a starring role in the championship.
Confirmation arrives from De Telegraaf
The well-known Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, traditionally close to figures who have passed through Red Bull, has reported that, according to multiple sources, Christian Horner is in talks with Alpine. Over recent months, Horner is said to have gathered a group of investors around him and is now preparing to acquire a stake in the French team.
At present, Alpine’s shareholding structure is divided between Renault, which owns 76 per cent of the team, and the American investment group Otro Capital, which holds the remaining 24 per cent. It is precisely this minority stake that has attracted Horner’s attention.
Christian Horner is reportedly pushing for a return to Formula 1 through the American shareholders of Otro Capital. The British manager has set his sights on that 24 per cent share, as the US-based fund is believed to be considering selling its stake in the team. This development could open the door for Horner to take on a significant role within Alpine’s future structure.
Dutch journalist Erik Van Haren provided an important detail on the situation, explaining: “We asked Horner whether he was in talks with Renault/Alpine, and he did not deny it. After that, he did not want to provide any further information.” Those words have only fuelled speculation that negotiations are already at an advanced stage.
If the move were to go ahead, Christian Horner would return to Formula 1 with Alpine powered by Mercedes engines. This detail is particularly striking given Horner’s long-standing rivalry and complex relationship with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. Such a scenario would add another intriguing layer to an already sensational potential comeback, one that could significantly reshape the Formula 1 landscape in the coming seasons.
