After months of rumors and retracted statements, Red Bull and Perez have reached an agreement to part ways at the end of 2024. The Mexican’s journey in Formula 1 thus comes to an end after over 10 seasons behind the wheel of a single-seater. With news of this significance, Christian Horner took the opportunity to highlight Sergio Perez’s contributions to Red Bull.
The news had been anticipated, and today it was confirmed by both parties. After spending four seasons driving for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, the Mexican is definitively leaving the Milton Keynes team. Five victories and numerous podiums will remain part of his career achievements enriched during his time with Red Bull. However, the immense pressure from Verstappen and challenges that increased in 2024 pushed the team to seek alternatives.
Despite this, Christian Horner’s team remains grateful for Sergio Perez’s seasons with Red Bull. Indeed, he was already an integral and crucial part of securing the drivers’ title with Verstappen in 2021. What weighed heavily on the decision, particularly in 2024, were numerous accidents, which increased the team’s financial burden. Perez, in fact, leads the “destroyers’ ranking” with nearly $5 million in damages in 2024.
“I would like to thank Checo for everything he has done for Oracle Red Bull Racing over the past four seasons. From the moment he joined the team in 2021, he proved to be an outstanding team player, helping us secure two constructors’ titles and our first 1-2 finish in the drivers’ championship. His five victories, all on street circuits, were a spectacular testament to his determination to push himself to the limit. Although Checo will not race for the Team next season, he will always be an extremely popular member of the Team and a valuable part of our history. Thank you, Checo.”
