Christian Horner believes Toto Wolff has a much easier time in Formula 1 following his departure from Red Bull, arguing that McLaren CEO Zak Brown cannot challenge the Mercedes team principal in the same way because of his team’s reliance on Mercedes power units. The former Red Bull boss has once again revisited one of Formula 1’s most intense rivalries, insisting that the political and sporting battles between the two managers played an important role in driving their teams towards success.
More than a year after being dismissed as Red Bull team principal midway through the 2025 season, Christian Horner remains closely associated with his long-running rivalry with Toto Wolff. In several recent interviews conducted around promotional events for his highly anticipated autobiography, Drive, the British manager has reflected on the relationship with his Austrian counterpart, with whom he shared the battle for almost all of Formula 1’s world championship titles over the past 15 years.
Christian Horner believes Zak Brown cannot challenge Toto Wolff in the same way
Christian Horner has repeatedly suggested that he was the only team boss capable of seriously challenging Toto Wolff, both on the sporting side and in Formula 1’s political arena. His latest remarks also included a pointed observation about McLaren CEO Zak Brown, whose team secured the last two Constructors’ Championships and the 2025 Drivers’ Championship with Lando Norris.
Despite those achievements, the former Red Bull chief does not believe Zak Brown can become the same kind of formidable rival for Toto Wolff. According to Christian Horner, the key difference is the commercial and technical relationship between McLaren and Mercedes, with the British team using power units supplied by the German manufacturer.
“Toto has it pretty easy at the moment. Zak Brown is in an awkward position because he uses Toto’s engine, so he can’t stir things up,” Christian Horner told The Guardian.
His argument is that McLaren’s dependence on Mercedes engines creates a potential limitation when it comes to challenging the manufacturer’s leadership. Christian Horner believes his own position at Red Bull allowed him to confront Toto Wolff much more directly, without the same relationship between a customer team and its power unit supplier.
How Christian Horner used the Mercedes rivalry to motivate Red Bull
For Christian Horner, the rivalry with Toto Wolff was never simply a personal confrontation. He also regarded it as a powerful motivational tool during his years at Red Bull, using the competitive tension between the two teams to encourage his staff to challenge Mercedes.
“Every sport needs rivalries, whether it’s [Sir Alex] Ferguson and [Arsène] Wenger, [José] Mourinho and [Pep] Guardiola. Rivalry spreads and polarises. I used it to motivate talented people to take on Mercedes,” Christian Horner explained.
The comparison with famous managerial rivalries in football highlights the importance Christian Horner places on strong personalities competing at the highest level. During his time at Red Bull, his confrontations with Toto Wolff extended beyond results on the circuit, becoming a defining feature of Formula 1’s wider sporting and political landscape.
Those battles also helped shape the championship’s recent history, particularly during periods when Mercedes and Red Bull were competing directly for world titles. Christian Horner has continued discussing that era since leaving the Milton Keynes team, while the competition between their former organisations has evolved under Formula 1’s 2026 regulations.
Christian Horner expresses enormous respect for Toto Wolff and Mercedes
Despite the criticism and years of public disagreements, Christian Horner insists that his relationship with Toto Wolff has always been underpinned by considerable professional respect. The former Red Bull boss recognises the scale of Mercedes’ achievements and believes the strength of the German team’s opposition made Red Bull’s success even more meaningful.
“Toto is a formidable opponent and Mercedes are an incredible team. Naturally, the success they enjoyed and achieved is what made the 2021 championship even more important for us,” Christian Horner explained in comments to Autosport.
The 2021 championship represented one of the defining moments of their rivalry, with Red Bull and Mercedes engaged in an exceptionally intense fight throughout the season. For Christian Horner, overcoming such an established and successful opponent added considerably to the significance of that achievement.
“He is emotional, he is competitive, he is determined. We enjoyed that rivalry. I have enormous respect for what he has done and the results he has achieved,” Christian Horner concluded.
The latest comments underline the complicated relationship between two of Formula 1’s most influential modern team bosses. While Christian Horner continues to question whether anyone currently on the grid can challenge Toto Wolff with the same intensity, his admiration for the Mercedes manager’s achievements remains clear. Their rivalry may no longer unfold directly in the paddock, but it continues to feature prominently in Christian Horner’s reflections on his Red Bull career.
