McLaren suffer dramatic double retirement before the start in China
The Chinese Grand Prix produced a major twist even before the race had begun. McLaren was unable to take part in the event with either of its cars, as both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were forced to retire before the start, leaving the Woking-based team without any chance of competing during the Shanghai race weekend.
The unexpected situation unfolded shortly before the formation lap, when the team discovered a technical issue that prevented the cars from taking their positions on the grid. As a result, both McLaren drivers were ruled out of the Grand Prix before the lights had even gone out.
Last attempt to repair Norris’ car
Initially, McLaren attempted to resolve the issue affecting Norris’ car in the hope of allowing the British driver to start the race from the pit lane. The mechanics worked extensively on the MCL machine in the garage, trying to restore the car to a condition that would allow it to run.
Despite those efforts, the technical checks carried out by the team did not deliver the desired outcome. After several attempts to fix the problem, the engineers concluded that the car could not be safely returned to the track.
Shortly afterwards, the final decision was taken. Piastri’s car was also brought back into the garage, meaning that neither of the two McLaren drivers would start the Chinese Grand Prix.
A difficult weekend for McLaren
According to the first information emerging from the paddock, the issue on Norris’ car appears to be linked to the electronic control unit, a malfunction that the team was unable to solve in time before the start of the race.
The British driver commented cautiously on the situation, explaining that the problem seemed to be unusual even for the team’s engineers.
“Well sure, I don’t think it’s ever happened before and that’s also the reason why we don’t know how to fix it. We’ll see what comes out of the analysis.”
For McLaren, the incident represents the first retirement of the season for Norris and the second consecutive disappointment for Oscar Piastri.
The Australian driver had already failed to start his home Grand Prix after crashing during the formation lap. At first, the incident appeared to be the result of a driver mistake, but a subsequent analysis revealed an anomaly in the amount of energy available at the moment of the accident.
Signs of a car still far from last year’s level
What is clear is that the problems seen within the McLaren camp so far this season suggest a car that is currently far from the level of consistency and reliability the team enjoyed last year.
While the Woking outfit remains one of the most competitive teams on the grid, the setbacks experienced in recent races highlight how even the smallest technical issues can dramatically affect a Formula 1 weekend.
For Norris and Piastri, the focus will now shift to understanding the root cause of the problem before the next round, as McLaren works to ensure that a similar scenario does not happen again during the remainder of the championship.
