Carlos Sainz’s off-track impact at Williams: helping the team grow despite limited points. Carlos Sainz may have few points on track with Williams.

Carlos Sainz, 2025 F1

Although Carlos Sainz has had a difficult start to the season with limited points on the board, his presence at Williams is already proving to be a valuable asset in terms of technical knowledge and team development. According to teammate Alexander Albon, the experience and insight that the former Ferrari driver brings to Grove are helping the team grow and consolidate its position in Formula 1.

When Carlos Sainz accepted Williams’ offer last year, most experts in the paddock predicted that the Spaniard would bring the know-how needed to elevate the team’s performance. Looking at the current Constructors’ Championship standings, where Williams occupies fifth place, it appears that the British team is enjoying its strongest season in roughly eight years.

However, expectations of an immediately competitive Carlos Sainz, capable of challenging Alexander Albon within the team hierarchy, have not fully materialized on track. Currently, Albon sits in eighth place with 54 championship points, while Carlos Sainz is sixteenth with just 16 points. As the summer break approaches, early assessments of the drivers can be made, and it is clear that Sainz has yet to deliver consistently strong results. It is worth noting, however, that in several races, he failed to finish due to reliability issues rather than performance deficiencies.

Nevertheless, according to Albon, Carlos Sainz’s arrival at Grove has been instrumental in helping the team mature. With experience gained from driving for high-profile teams such as Renault, McLaren, and Ferrari, the Madrid-born driver possesses a skill set that allows engineers to optimize the car more efficiently. His ability to provide precise feedback saves valuable time during car setup, a critical advantage for a team competing in the mid-field.

Albon praises Sainz: “Carlos understands the car immediately”
In an era of Formula 1 where practice sessions are limited to just one hour per session—or even a single session during sprint race weekends—having a driver who quickly grasps a car’s issues and communicates them clearly is an invaluable asset. For teams like Williams, fighting for mid-field positions, this expertise can make a significant difference. In an interview with RN365, Alexander Albon detailed how Carlos Sainz’s contributions are helping the Grove squad improve.

“With Carlos providing detailed feedback, we can analyze the car faster and in more depth. We’re managing to extract performance from the car that we wouldn’t otherwise achieve. Both of us have experience behind us. I think Carlos and I make a good pair because I’ve driven this car extensively, while he has driven other cars and knows what can be achieved,” the Thai driver explained.

Although Sainz’s on-track results have not yet reflected the expectations placed upon him, his impact on the internal growth and technical development of Williams is clear. The second half of the season will be decisive in determining whether the Madrid-born driver’s expertise and strategic vision can also translate into significant championship points, allowing the Grove-based team to solidify its standing in the Constructors’ Championship.
