Carlos Sainz will hold talks with Williams during the summer as he considers whether to continue with the Grove-based team or pursue a new opportunity in Formula 1. The Spanish driver is unhappy with how Williams approached the new technical regulations, with the delayed arrival of the FW48 and an ineffective first upgrade package contributing to a difficult 2026 campaign.
The situation has left Carlos Sainz facing an important decision about his future. After ending 2025 on an encouraging run of form, the former Ferrari driver had hoped Williams would take another significant step forward this season. Instead, the results have lacked the expected consistency and his performances have remained below the level anticipated before the campaign began.
Carlos Sainz weighs his Williams future
Carlos Sainz’s difficulties have been primarily linked to the competitiveness of the car and the challenge of finding the right feeling with it at every race weekend. Williams has since slipped to ninth in the Constructors’ Championship after its FW48 development failed to produce the required progress.
Development has become particularly important under Formula 1’s new regulations because the cars are making substantial lap-time gains from one Grand Prix to the next. Williams has fallen short of expectations in that area, first by presenting the FW48 later than planned and then by introducing an underwhelming initial upgrade package at the Miami Grand Prix.
The car’s limitations have also been acknowledged by Alex Albon, who recently identified the main FW48 weakness restricting Williams’ performance. Carlos Sainz is therefore assessing his options as he considers whether to renew his contract or begin another chapter elsewhere in Formula 1.
Carlos Sainz plans summer talks with Williams
“Honestly, I don’t know when I will make a decision about my future. I will wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about it, but I cannot give a date,” Carlos Sainz said.
“I will discuss the future of the team and my future within it. I expect that during the summer we will start making a decision and have a clearer picture of the situation, but I still don’t know exactly when,” the Spanish driver added.
The second half of the season will now provide Carlos Sainz with a crucial opportunity to revive his campaign at Williams while also demonstrating his value to other teams. A stronger run of performances could help rebuild confidence in the project, although the team will also need to show that it can accelerate the FW48’s development.
Audi reunion appears unlikely for Carlos Sainz
There has been speculation about a possible reunion between Carlos Sainz and Mattia Binotto at Audi. The Spaniard previously chose Williams instead of Audi, however, and Mattia Binotto has since closed the door on a move following that rejection two years ago.
Audi is also following a long-term rebuilding strategy and has already shifted part of its attention towards the future after deciding to stop introducing major 2026 power-unit upgrades. For Carlos Sainz, the immediate priority will be to understand whether Williams can provide the development progress and competitive future he expected when he joined the team.
