As Formula 1 arrives in Monaco, Carlos Sainz has offered an honest assessment of both his future with Williams and the team’s ambitions for the remainder of the season. The Spanish driver also discussed the unique challenge of Monte Carlo, the impact of the latest regulations and the increasingly active driver market.
While his commitment to Williams remains strong, Sainz made it clear that his long-term ambition has not changed: he still wants to fight for race victories and eventually challenge for a Formula 1 World Championship.
Monaco expectations and the new regulations
The streets of Monte Carlo present one of the most unique challenges of the Formula 1 season, and this year particular attention is being paid to the new generation of shorter cars and the effectiveness of the overtake mode.
According to Carlos Sainz, the opening practice sessions will be crucial in determining whether the new systems can genuinely create overtaking opportunities around the narrow streets of the Principality.
There is also considerable excitement surrounding a race weekend in which drivers are not expected to spend the entire time managing power unit energy. Thanks to the current technical package and the latest FIA regulations, simulator work has already suggested that drivers may be able to push much harder throughout a lap without major compromises.
If that proves to be the case, Monaco could deliver one of the most intense qualifying sessions of the season, with teams focusing entirely on extracting maximum performance rather than balancing energy limitations.
Looking beyond Monaco, Sainz acknowledged that more significant regulatory changes may still be necessary for Formula 1 to reach its ideal technical balance in future seasons, even though the racing in 2026 has generally been entertaining.
Sainz on his Williams future
With the driver market beginning to gather momentum, Sainz’s long-term future remains a frequent topic of discussion. The Spaniard reiterated that his ideal scenario involves a lengthy stay at Williams, while continuing to nurture the ambitious dream of helping the team return to the front of the grid.
Sainz believes he has the ability to win races and fight for a world championship if given the right machinery. His performances during his years at Ferrari demonstrated exactly that.
Returning Williams to competitiveness is a project to which he is fully committed, dedicating significant effort both on and off the track. However, the competitive instinct that has defined his Formula 1 career remains very much alive.
The desire to fight for victories and championships has not diminished. Sainz knows those objectives are achievable with a sufficiently competitive car, although he also recognises that Williams is currently some distance away from that position after struggling to produce the level of performance expected from its 2026 challenger.
Despite reported interest and enquiries from other teams, the Spanish driver insisted that his focus remains firmly on helping Williams overcome its current technical challenges.
Williams has also given him a level of responsibility and influence within the project that he feels is particularly important. For now, any major decisions regarding the driver market appear likely to be postponed until later in the season.
Williams targeting progress through development
To recover from a difficult start to the year, Williams has established a clear roadmap for improvement. The team’s primary objective is to finish the season as the benchmark outfit in Formula 1’s midfield battle.
Achieving that goal will require progress in several key areas, particularly reducing the car’s weight and introducing effective aerodynamic upgrades throughout the season.
Although the FW48 has not lived up to the team’s original expectations, which were considerably higher at the start of the year, becoming the leading midfield team would still represent a meaningful achievement.
Considering the significant difficulties encountered during the opening phase of the campaign, reaching that target would help transform a challenging season into an important stepping stone for the future.
For Carlos Sainz, the mission is therefore twofold: help Williams climb back towards the front of the midfield while continuing to build the foundations for a future in which the historic British team can once again dream of competing for victories and championships.
