Williams arrived at its home race at Silverstone hoping to fight for points, boosted by a special livery and a new package of upgrades. Instead, the 2026 British Grand Prix turned into a disappointing weekend for the Grove-based team, with neither driver able to produce the result they had hoped for.
Alex Albon retires after difficult race
Alex Albon’s afternoon unraveled almost immediately. After making contact on the opening lap and damaging his front wing, the Anglo-Thai driver was forced to pit early for repairs. His race later ended in retirement due to a technical issue.
“Unfortunately, we had a bad start and made a mistake on the opening lap that damaged the front wing, so we had to pit early,” Albon explained. “After that, we got stuck behind a series of blue flags and couldn’t make up any ground on the pack. We then changed strategy and used the rest of the race as a test session to gather more data on the upgraded front wing we introduced this weekend.”
“These test sessions seem to sum up our season so far, but we remain focused on collecting as much data as possible and understanding it so that, when we introduce future upgrades, we’ll be in a better position. It’s frustrating, but we’ll debrief and turn our attention to Spa in two weeks’ time.”
Carlos Sainz calls Silverstone a wake-up call
Carlos Sainz managed to reach the chequered flag and was initially classified in 12th place. However, after the race, the Spaniard received a one-lap penalty for overtaking the Safety Car under the mistaken belief that he had been authorized to rejoin the lead lap, when in fact he had not. As a result, the former Ferrari driver was demoted to 17th in the final classification.
Despite the penalty, Sainz was far more concerned about Williams’ overall lack of performance.
“This weekend was much more difficult than we expected or hoped,” he admitted. “We need to focus on what’s wrong with the car and analyze why the upgrade package didn’t deliver the results we expected, because this is a real wake-up call for us.”
“I made another excellent start in the race and overtook all the cars I needed to move into the points. I tried to defend 10th place with everything I had, but we simply didn’t have the pace to keep the others behind us.”
Sainz also praised the effort made by the Williams team despite the disappointing outcome.
“I feel I’m performing at a very high level, and the team also did everything possible to arrive here with two upgraded front wings, which is reassuring and positive to see. But now we need a much deeper analysis to understand what’s happening with our car because we’re missing far too much performance. We’ll take a few days to reset and come back stronger at Spa.”
