The Spanish driver has raced for several teams: Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari. After spending four years at Maranello, Carlos Sainz decided to return to a British team in 2025, Williams.
The Spaniard has already started working with the Grove team during the post-season tests in Abu Dhabi, though his official farewell to Ferrari came a few days later. Now, however, Carlos is a full-time Williams driver and is getting to know the team members.
He shared some thoughts on the team’s personnel, which suggest that this was the right choice for his needs. Carlos explained that, initially, when evaluating the team to join, he was focused on performance. “I was very focused on which team would be fastest in 2025, who would generate more downforce, who would discover things that would make them faster.”
“In the end, I realized that my decision had to be based on two things: the project and the people. And when I started discussing the details with James, I realized he had put together a very strong project here at Williams. He was forming a team with a project that I think will bring this team back to the front with very strong leadership, and with a vision that from the start made me fall in love with the project.”
Just a few weeks before the start of his first season with Williams, the Spanish driver has already connected with the team that will accompany him on this journey.
He spoke about the motivation he found in all the team members, who are dedicated to the work despite a challenging 2024. “I found people really excited and very motivated to work during those two days [of tests in Abu Dhabi]. And it’s not easy because the Abu Dhabi test is after a triple-header, so everyone is very low on energy. I’ve done that test with other teams, and I know how tired everyone is at the end of the season at that point.”
“I saw smiling faces everywhere. I saw people who wanted to participate, who wanted to collaborate, who wanted to make that test as positive as possible. And honestly, I was extremely impressed and really enjoyed those two days.”
