Cadillac has reportedly selected reigning FIA Formula 3 champion Ugo Ugochukwu to take part in its rookie FP1 sessions during the 2027 Formula 1 season. The American team is continuing to build its long-term driver development programme after entering F1 with the experienced pairing of Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, and the 19-year-old New Yorker could now receive an important opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in an official Grand Prix weekend.
According to AutoRacer, Ugo Ugochukwu will be entrusted with Cadillac’s rookie free practice appearances next season. The decision would allow the American operation to evaluate one of the most promising talents to emerge from the junior single-seater categories while integrating him into its wider Formula 1 development plans.
Cadillac’s ambitions extend beyond developing its car and strengthening its technical organisation. Having relied on the considerable experience of Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas throughout its debut campaign, the team is also beginning to establish a pathway for younger drivers, particularly those from the United States.
Ugo Ugochukwu set for Cadillac F1 opportunity after Formula 3 title
Born in New York in 2007, Ugo Ugochukwu has established himself as one of the most promising young drivers in international single-seater racing. He joined McLaren’s driver development programme at an early age before progressing through the junior categories, achieving notable results in Formula 4 and Formula Regional.
One of his most significant early achievements came in 2024, when he won the prestigious Macau Grand Prix. The following year, Ugo Ugochukwu stepped up to FIA Formula 3 with Prema, completing a learning season in which he secured two podium finishes.
His move to Campos Racing for the 2026 campaign marked a significant improvement in his results. The American driver emerged as a championship contender and ultimately secured the FIA Formula 3 title, establishing himself as one of the leading prospects seeking to progress further up the Formula 1 ladder.
The championship was decided at the final round in Madrid, where Ugo Ugochukwu completed his comeback against Freddie Slater to claim the title with 159 points. In doing so, he became the first American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
That achievement has further strengthened his credentials for a future in Formula 1, making the reported Cadillac FP1 opportunity an important next step in his development.
Ugo Ugochukwu already has Formula 1 testing experience with Alpine
Although the planned Cadillac appearances would represent a new stage in his career, Ugo Ugochukwu has already experienced driving a Formula 1 car.
In June 2026, the American participated in a test at Monza behind the wheel of Alpine’s A524 as part of a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme. These sessions allow drivers to gain experience with machinery from earlier Formula 1 seasons, providing valuable preparation before taking part in official Grand Prix weekends.
The Monza outing gave Ugo Ugochukwu an opportunity to begin familiarising himself with the technical characteristics of an F1 car and the operational procedures involved in running it. However, his test ended prematurely following an off-track excursion at the Variante Ascari.
Despite that setback, the experience represented an important introduction to Formula 1 machinery. His reported 2027 rookie practice programme with Cadillac would provide another opportunity to develop that understanding in a more competitive environment.
Cadillac strengthens American driver plans alongside Colton Herta
The reported decision to bring Ugo Ugochukwu into Cadillac’s 2027 FP1 programme forms part of a broader strategy focused on identifying and developing American racing talent.
Colton Herta already represents a significant investment in that direction. The former IndyCar driver moved into Formula 2 for the 2026 season while also participating in Formula 1 practice sessions designed, in part, to help him meet the requirements for an FIA Super Licence.
Colton Herta is expected to complete the final one of Cadillac’s four rookie FP1 appearances in 2026, potentially at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, driving the team’s MAC-26.
His transition has been an important part of Cadillac’s ambition to develop an American driver capable of competing at the highest level. However, the paths followed by Colton Herta and Ugo Ugochukwu are notably different.
Colton Herta arrived with extensive experience in American motorsport, having established himself in IndyCar before accepting the challenge of adapting to European single-seater machinery and progressing towards a possible Formula 1 debut.
Ugo Ugochukwu, by contrast, has developed entirely through the traditional junior single-seater categories. His progression through Formula 4, Formula Regional and Formula 3 has provided a different foundation, while his 2026 championship success has strengthened his case for opportunities at a higher level.
Cadillac’s wider driver planning has also attracted attention as the team considers its longer-term Formula 1 options. The American operation has previously been linked with other emerging talents, including Ferrari Driver Academy prospect Rafael Câmara, whose potential Cadillac opportunity has been discussed alongside Colton Herta’s Formula 1 ambitions.
Why Cadillac’s 2027 rookie FP1 programme matters
For Cadillac, the planned 2027 rookie practice sessions would provide an opportunity to assess Ugo Ugochukwu in an official Formula 1 environment rather than relying exclusively on his results in the junior categories or private testing.
The team would be able to compare his performance with the benchmarks established by its regular race drivers, while also evaluating how quickly he adapts to the technical demands and operational procedures of a modern Formula 1 team.
Such an assessment would be particularly valuable for a young driver moving closer to the highest level of motorsport. Working with race engineers, understanding the car’s behaviour and delivering useful feedback during a limited practice session all form part of the learning process.
For Ugo Ugochukwu, the reported opportunity would represent another important milestone after his Formula 3 championship victory. For Cadillac, it would reinforce the team’s commitment to developing American talent as it continues establishing its future in Formula 1.
