Filming for F1, the long-awaited Brad Pitt movie set in the world of the premier motorsport class, continues, though not without some unease. The storyline focuses on a former veteran Formula 1 driver returning to the Circus to mentor a young prospect (played by Damson Idris). The two become teammates in the fictional team APXGP.
To make the film more realistic, filming was carried out during several race weekends and involved actual Formula 1 drivers. Mercedes plays an active role in the project, not only because Lewis Hamilton is one of the executive producers (and is also contributing to the script), but also because Mercedes modified Formula 2 cars for use in the film.
The German team’s support has raised some concerns among other teams, as confirmed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “The interesting part is that since we started collaborating with Mercedes, other teams said, ‘Wait a second, this film will be about Mercedes and we’ll look bad,’” he recounted at the 2024 Investor Day in New York.
Red Bull, in particular, was extremely worried about how they would be portrayed. Jerry Bruckheimer explained that Horner’s team approached him saying, “Are we going to be the villains?” The producer continued, “It took three years to convince them that this would not be the case.”
“And finally, we’ve reached a point where all the teams are really leaning in to help us.”
There is silence regarding the film’s promotion, which, according to Deadline, might take place at Cannes next year. “I think we’ll show it to the F1 drivers and teams in Monaco. Then we’ll have premieres in New York, London, and a bunch of other cities,” said Bruckheimer.
