F1 | Respiratory infection but second place: Russell shines and looks ahead to Singapore – Baku GP
Mercedes came alive in the chilly conditions of Baku, and George Russell took full advantage. The British driver crossed the line in second place despite struggling with health issues, proving his resilience and focus under challenging circumstances.
While McLaren and Ferrari were expected to contest the top positions, it was Red Bull, Mercedes, and Williams that made the difference in this race. The Silver Arrows, in particular, thrived in Baku’s low temperatures, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli finishing just off the podium and Russell claiming second despite not being at full health.
George Russell started the race from fifth on the grid on hard tires. After a brief early skirmish with his Mercedes teammate, he quickly settled into a competitive rhythm, showcasing the car’s pace and his strategic awareness on track.
While Antonelli was among the first drivers to pit and change tires, the 1998-born British driver continued pushing on, delaying his pit stop for as long as possible. Mercedes then executed the perfect timing for his stop, successfully completing an overcut on Carlos Sainz and securing yet another podium for the season.
Mercedes regains ground in the Constructors’ Championship
With this result, Mercedes overtakes Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings and once again positions itself as the main contender chasing McLaren, even if still at a slight distance. The team’s performance in Baku highlights both strategic skill and adaptability under varying conditions.
“It was a really solid race. The key was staying out of trouble,” George Russell told media representatives at the circuit, including F1inGenerale. “We didn’t do anything spectacular, but many others made mistakes between qualifying and the race.”
He added, “Under normal conditions, we would have been ahead of Carlos (Sainz), but he drove really well, so I had to give everything to finish ahead of him. Looking to the future, cooler temperatures like here helped us keep the tires in the optimal range, so Singapore will be a different story.”
