Ayrton Senna’s personal Honda NSX is heading to auction in London, giving collectors the opportunity to acquire one of the road cars most closely associated with the three-time Formula 1 World Champion. The red 1991 NSX, which Senna used during his stays in Portugal, will go under the hammer on 31 October with a starting estimate of around £500,000, equivalent to almost €600,000.
Some cars become far more than a means of transport as the years pass. They turn into genuine pieces of motorsport history, preserved more like museum exhibits than vehicles intended for everyday use. Senna’s Honda NSX belongs firmly in that category.

The car will be offered in London by prestigious auction house RM Sotheby’s. Its connection with Ayrton Senna makes it considerably more valuable than a conventional first-generation NSX, reflecting both the Brazilian’s enduring status in Formula 1 and the growing collector interest surrounding cars with significant motorsport provenance.
A few years ago, another Honda NSX associated with Ayrton Senna was offered at a figure roughly one fifth of the amount now attached to this example. The dramatic difference illustrates how the reputation and market value of Formula 1 memorabilia connected to legendary drivers have continued to grow.
This particular NSX is finished in Formula Red with a contrasting black roof and matching black leather interior. Senna kept the car for personal use in Portugal during the early 1990s, and it appeared in a number of photographs from that period.
Why Ayrton Senna became so closely associated with the Honda NSX
Ayrton Senna had an unusually strong connection with the NSX. Beyond using the model as a road car, the Brazilian also played a role in its development while competing in Formula 1 with Honda-powered McLaren machinery.
Honda engineers asked Senna to assess an early version of the NSX, and his feedback became part of the development process that helped refine the Japanese manufacturer’s new sports car. His association with the model subsequently became one of the best-known examples of a leading racing driver providing technical feedback on a production performance car.
Senna was also filmed driving a Honda NSX around Suzuka, footage that has enjoyed another wave of popularity in the social-media era. The onboard images of the Brazilian working the pedals with remarkable precision became particularly famous because of his unusual driving attire: loafers combined with white socks.
The footwear may have attracted plenty of amused comments over the years, but the footage also offered a remarkable demonstration of Senna’s car control, including his rapid heel-and-toe technique while pushing the Honda around Suzuka.
Senna’s NSX has become a valuable piece of Formula 1 history
The relationship between Ayrton Senna and Honda extended well beyond Formula 1. His feedback on the NSX helped strengthen the car’s connection with motorsport at a time when Honda was attempting to create a performance model capable of challenging established European sports cars.
That history now contributes heavily to the value attached to Senna’s personal example. Rather than simply being an early Honda NSX in an iconic colour combination, it represents a physical link to one of Formula 1’s most celebrated drivers and to a particularly important period in Honda’s performance-car history.
When the car crosses the auction block in London on 31 October, the eventual price will offer another indication of how valuable genuine Ayrton Senna memorabilia has become. More than three decades after the Brazilian’s Formula 1 career, cars and objects directly associated with him continue to attract extraordinary interest from collectors around the world.
