Following a positive weekend in Catalunya, McLaren travels to the Red Bull Ring with growing confidence about the remainder of its 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
The Woking-based team has faced several reliability concerns this season, most of them linked to the Mercedes-supplied power unit. These issues have particularly affected Lando Norris, who has repeatedly been forced to miss parts of practice sessions or lose valuable track time while repairs were carried out.
At the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, however, McLaren finally enjoyed a weekend free from reliability setbacks. For the first time in several races, the team was able to execute its programme exactly as planned, marking a significant improvement compared to previous events where technical problems disrupted not only race performances but also crucial practice sessions.
Andrea Stella reflects on the Spanish Grand Prix
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella expressed his satisfaction with how the Barcelona weekend unfolded, particularly from a reliability perspective.
“Finally, a relatively calm and clean weekend from a reliability point of view,” he told the media.
He acknowledged that the team should not overlook the difficulties experienced earlier in the season, which had also impacted practice running, but admitted that the situation had clearly improved in Spain. Andrea Stella emphasized the importance of taking a long-term view when assessing reliability rather than drawing conclusions from a single race weekend.
“Reliability, you know, I don’t want to judge it on a single race. I would rather evaluate it over the course of the entire season and say that we have had a couple of exceptions. We need to rebuild from where we were, so we take it one race at a time, one event at a time. It is positive that we did not have any issues here in Spain. We have certainly raised the bar, increased our level of attention, and used the situations from previous races to reset and improve our standards in the way we do things.”
A clear mission for McLaren
As the championship increasingly develops into an intense upgrade battle, McLaren understands that reliability remains a crucial foundation for success. Ferrari recently demonstrated the impact that a major development package can have, introducing extensive upgrades in Barcelona that helped Lewis Hamilton secure his first victory in red.
Against that backdrop, Stella reiterated the importance of maintaining the highest possible standards in reliability. Only by eliminating technical distractions can the team devote all of its energy and resources to extracting more performance from the car.
“This is McLaren, and this is also McLaren together with our suppliers and our collaboration with Mercedes HPP. We have to maintain our standards. The mission is very clear. We want to think only about performance, an area of performance in which we also have quite a lot of room for improvement,” said the team principal.
McLaren’s objective is to ensure that the reliability problems seen earlier in the season become isolated incidents rather than recurring concerns. By continuously raising operational standards, the team hopes to direct every available resource toward performance development in what has become an increasingly competitive Formula 1 season.
The Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring will provide the next opportunity to demonstrate that progress. With reliability seemingly moving in the right direction, McLaren now hopes to translate that stability into stronger results and a more consistent challenge at the front of the field.
