Audi confirms Freddie Slater F1 debut in Mexico and Brazil FP1 sessions

Audi 2026 F1

Freddie Slater will make his Formula 1 debut with Audi during the opening free practice sessions at the 2026 Mexico City and São Paulo Grands Prix. The young British driver will take the wheel of the Audi R26 for two FP1 appearances after finishing runner-up in his rookie Formula 3 season, marking another important step towards his ambition of reaching Formula 1.

The opportunity comes ahead of Freddie Slater’s move to Formula 2 with Invicta Racing in 2027. Audi selected the British youngster as the first member of its Driver Development Programme, recognising his potential after his impressive performances in the junior categories. His first outings in Formula 1 machinery will provide valuable experience before the next stage of his career.

Freddie Slater to make Audi F1 debut in Mexico and Brazil

Freddie Slater will participate in the first free practice sessions at both the Mexico City and São Paulo Grands Prix, making his Formula 1 debut during the closing stages of the 2026 championship. The appearances represent a significant opportunity for a driver widely regarded as one of Britain’s most promising young racing talents.

Audi’s decision also highlights the importance the German manufacturer places on its young-driver development programme. Freddie Slater became the first driver recruited to the initiative, with the team identifying his potential before his debut Formula 3 campaign.

The programme forms part of the manufacturer’s broader long-term ambitions as it establishes itself in Formula 1. Audi has continued developing its Formula 1 project throughout its first season, while investing in the next generation of drivers.

Freddie Slater’s impressive Formula 3 rookie season earns F1 opportunity

Already a champion in Italian Formula 4 and Formula Regional European, Freddie Slater continued his progression by finishing second in the 2026 Formula 3 championship behind Ugo Ugochukwu. The two drivers remained in contention for the title until the final round in Madrid, underlining the competitiveness of the campaign.

Freddie Slater was the highest-placed rookie in the standings, recording eight podium finishes during his debut season. His achievements included an early podium in Australia and a victory in the Feature Race at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Those performances strengthened his reputation as a potential future Formula 1 driver and secured his promotion to Formula 2 with Invicta Racing for 2027.

Freddie Slater will follow a path previously taken by other Trident Formula 3 drivers, including Gabriel Bortoleto, Leonardo Fornaroli and Rafael Câmara. All three progressed to Formula 2 after competing with the Italian team, and Freddie Slater will aim to challenge for the championship immediately, following the example of his predecessors.

Audi completes mandatory rookie FP1 programme with Freddie Slater

Beyond providing valuable experience for Freddie Slater, the two appearances will also allow Audi to fulfil its mandatory rookie practice requirements for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Earlier in the championship, Alpine junior driver Paul Aron was loaned to Audi on two occasions to participate in free practice sessions. Those outings accounted for two of the team’s four mandatory rookie appearances.

Freddie Slater has therefore been assigned the final two sessions, with the British youngster set to replace Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto on one occasion each.

The arrangement will give Freddie Slater the opportunity to experience a modern Formula 1 car in the demanding environment of an official Grand Prix weekend. It will also allow him to work alongside Audi’s engineers while learning the procedures and technical requirements involved in competing at the highest level.

The appearances come as Audi continues evaluating the performance of the R26, with regular drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto working to improve the team’s competitiveness during its debut season.

Freddie Slater reacts to first Formula 1 opportunity with Audi

Freddie Slater expressed his excitement at the announcement, explaining that driving a Formula 1 car during a Grand Prix weekend represents the fulfilment of a childhood ambition.

“Getting behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car during a Grand Prix weekend is a huge moment for me, a dream I’ve been chasing since I was a child,” Freddie Slater said. “I’ve learned so much this year, and these free practice outings with Audi will be another opportunity to gain more experience on track.”

The British driver also thanked Audi for the support and opportunities he has received since joining its development programme, emphasising that his immediate priority will be to contribute to the team’s work.

“Being part of the Audi Driver Development Programme has already given me incredible opportunities, and I’m truly grateful for the trust and support they’ve shown me. I can’t wait to get out on track. My only objective will be to do the best job possible, support the team with its programme and learn as much as I can from every single lap in both sessions.”

Allan McNish explains why Audi believes Freddie Slater is ready

Allan McNish, Audi’s racing director and the official responsible for overseeing operations at the circuit during Grand Prix weekends, believes the time is right for Freddie Slater to take the next step in his development.

“We’ve seen Freddie make tremendous progress over the past few years, both on and off the track. This is the right time for him to take the next step,” Allan McNish commented.

The former racing driver emphasised the value of gaining experience during an official Formula 1 weekend, particularly ahead of Freddie Slater’s Formula 2 debut next season.

“The sessions in Mexico and Brazil will give him valuable experience within a Formula 1 race weekend, offering him another opportunity to develop before making his Formula 2 debut next season. We’re excited to see him behind the wheel of the R26 and to support him through these two important FP1 sessions.”

For Freddie Slater, the Mexico City and São Paulo appearances represent another significant milestone in a rapidly developing career. With his Formula 3 rookie campaign completed and a Formula 2 opportunity already secured, the British youngster now has the chance to demonstrate his abilities in Formula 1 machinery while continuing his progression through Audi’s development programme.
