The clock is ticking for Fernando Alonso, who has already made it clear when he plans to take a decision on his future in Formula 1.
You cannot race forever, as one might say when paraphrasing one of the most iconic quotes in the history of cinema, and Fernando Alonso is fully aware of that reality. The two-time Formula 1 world champion finds himself at a crucial and defining moment in his life, both professionally and personally.
Alonso is about to become a father for the first time, as his partner, journalist Melissa Jimenez, is expecting a child, and later this year he will turn 45 years old. Time inevitably begins to weigh on any athlete, even if, deep down, “Nando” still feels like a lion, driven by the same competitive fire that has defined his entire career at the highest level of motorsport.
The driver market is set to become a hot topic once again, with almost all seats still available for the 2027 Formula 1 season. Pressed by Spanish newspaper AS about his plans, Fernando Alonso admitted that he has not yet made a final decision about what he intends to do next.
“I don’t know. I think this year we just need to wait a little bit longer because the progression and evolution of the cars will be incredible. Instead of improving by one or two tenths with an upgrade package, we could end up improving by eight tenths or even a second. So I think that over the course of this season we will see major changes in the performance of the teams,” Alonso explained.
The Aston Martin driver also appeared to set a tentative timeframe for when he will decide on his future in Formula 1. “Making a decision in April or May could be right or wrong, it depends on how things go. The more I can wait, the better it is. My intention is to wait until September to make a decision. We’ll see,” Fernando Alonso added.
Alonso and the future: not just an on-track factor
The question is not limited to how competitive Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin will be this season. It also concerns how Fernando Alonso will manage the stress and demands away from the racetrack, an aspect that becomes increasingly significant at this stage of his career.
“I don’t think it’s only about performance. I have to understand how I feel, how motivated I am, how much the travelling weighs on me, the events, the marketing commitments and everything that happens off the track. I think that from the start of the year the team will improve a lot. That will be motivation to continue, to see that the car is improving and to see some results as well. However, before I can take a final decision, there’s nothing else to do but hope for the best possible outcome… if the team can achieve it,” the former Ferrari and McLaren driver said.
Fernando Alonso is also aware that if he does not make a decision quickly, the pressure may come directly from the team itself. “Because one thing is what you want, but if the team wants to know in spring whether you are continuing or not, so they don’t end up without options with the other drivers who are still on the market, then it means I will be under pressure to make a decision as soon as possible,” the Spaniard concluded.
Fernando Alonso’s desire to delay his decision until September therefore highlights the immense technical uncertainty surrounding the new 2026 regulations and the rapid development of the AMR26. As he balances the personal milestone of fatherhood with the professional demands of a 24-race calendar, the Spaniard is clearly prioritizing motivation and the potential of Adrian Newey’s project over a quick signature. However, with the 2027 driver market expected to move early, the veteran champion’s “wait and see” approach may soon clash with Aston Martin’s need for long-term stability, setting the stage for a high-stakes game of patience between the driver and the team.
