Born in 2009, Zhenrui Chi has officially joined the Aston Martin Driver Academy. The young Chinese driver, coming off strong performances in junior Formula racing—particularly in Formula 4—will now become part of the British team’s expanding junior development programme, aimed at nurturing future Formula 1 talent.
At a time when Formula 1 engines remain idle due to a forced break in the calendar following the cancellation of the two Middle Eastern Grands Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, news from the teams continues to emerge off track, with driver development programmes remaining highly active.
In fact, Aston Martin announced yesterday via official press release that it has signed a highly promising young driver.
The driver in question is Zhenrui Chi, who stood out during the previous season in various Formula 4 championships, particularly in Italian F4. There, he achieved a notable victory at Monza along with four additional podium finishes, underlining his rapid progression in junior single-seater racing.
The young driver is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in Asian motorsport. He has already become a focal point of interest for Chinese motorsport fans, who, following the presence of Guanyu Zhou in Formula 1, are now hoping that the 2009-born talent can become the next major figure to represent China on the global racing stage.
The 17-year-old expressed his excitement at joining the academy of one of the most historic names in motorsport. He stated:
“Joining the Aston Martin family is a huge honour for me. It is a great responsibility, but also an incredible opportunity and motivation to push myself beyond my current level. Knowing that I have the support of such an iconic team, with its experience and knowledge, gives me a lot of confidence for the near future. I know it will require hard work and dedication, and I am aware that I must continue to prove that I deserve this opportunity. I am ready to give everything I have and I cannot wait to start this journey with Aston Martin.”
Zhenrui will now have the opportunity to develop within a team that is not currently at the very top of the Formula 1 hierarchy, but which possesses significant financial and technical resources capable of supporting his long-term growth in motorsport. The Aston Martin Driver Academy director, Nuno Pinto, expressed his enthusiasm at welcoming the young driver into the programme and highlighted the strong potential identified by the team’s scouting department, particularly following an evaluation test at the Mugello circuit.
All that remains is to closely follow the next steps in Zhenrui Chi’s development across the junior categories, to see whether he can maintain and further build upon the promising level of performance he has shown so far in his early racing career.
The inclusion of Zhenrui Chi into the Aston Martin fold therefore highlights the team’s commitment to scouting global talent and building a foundation for the future. As the sport continues to grow in the Asian market, providing a structured pathway for young drivers like Chi is essential for ensuring a diverse and competitive grid in the years to come.
