After being called in to replace Liam Lawson, Yuki Tsunoda is also struggling to keep up with Max Verstappen at Red Bull, with Helmut Marko explaining the reasons behind it.
There seems to be a real curse on the second seat at Milton Keynes. After Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson, and Pierre Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda too is finding it difficult to keep up with Max Verstappen, who appears to be the only one capable of taming the Red Bull, as confirmed by Helmut Marko.
Helmut Marko explains Yuki Tsunoda’s difficulties
The senior advisor to the team led by Christian Horner, when asked about the struggles of the former VCARB Japanese driver, tried to clarify the situation. “To be as competitive as the others, Max needs to push the car to its limits. This is most evident in qualifying, where he gives it everything. On the other hand, there’s Yuki, who in trying to match Verstappen’s level, ends up going beyond the limit and making mistakes,” said Helmut Marko.
So the “fault” would lie with Max Verstappen, who manages to take the car to a level beyond its true potential. This, however, distorts the external perception of Red Bull’s competitiveness, leading to unfair assessments of his teammates. As long as the Dutchman continues to rack up wins and pole positions, it’s unlikely that Helmut Marko and Christian Horner will change their philosophy — or their driver. Unless the four-time world champion himself decides it’s time for a change.
