The 2026 season marks Franco Colapinto’s first full year in Formula 1 with Alpine, and the French team is ready to provide him with complete backing as he tackles his debut full season in the sport. Alpine Managing Director Steve Nielsen confirmed the team’s commitment, emphasizing that the young Argentine driver is still in the process of developing his skills and experience at the pinnacle of motorsport. After a challenging 2025 in which Franco Colapinto failed to score points, Alpine’s focus is on creating the ideal environment for him to unlock his potential and consistently contribute to the constructors’ championship.
Colapinto versus Gasly: performance and potential
Nielsen highlighted that Franco Colapinto has already shown encouraging signs of pace, particularly in races where he kept up with Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, and on some occasions even matched or exceeded his race rhythm. Nielsen explained that Alpine understands that young drivers often face a steep learning curve: “Franco is still gaining experience, and we’ve seen many young drivers go through ups and downs. That’s normal. We will provide him with every support possible to be fast, whether he is ahead of or close to Pierre.” The team’s objective is clear: to have both drivers regularly scoring points, following a 2025 season in which only one car contributed to the points tally—and even then, inconsistently.
Stability and development at the core of Alpine’s strategy
Steve Nielsen also stressed the importance of patience and measured development: “We need stability in the second car and time for Franco’s talent to mature and deliver points. Having two drivers who consistently contribute is essential.” Transitioning from Williams to Alpine was not immediate for Franco Colapinto, as adapting to a different car required time. However, the team believes that, with the right environment and resources, the young Argentine can progress rapidly alongside Pierre Gasly, improving consistency and results as early as the 2026 season.
Alpine’s approach reflects a broader strategy of nurturing emerging talent while ensuring that both drivers can deliver points regularly, helping the team compete at the top of the constructors’ standings in a fiercely competitive Formula 1 grid.
The 2026 season represents a “make or break” opportunity for Franco Colapinto to prove he belongs at the sharp end of the grid. By providing him with the stability and technical backing he lacked in previous stints, Alpine is making a significant bet on the Argentinian’s long-term growth. If Colapinto can bridge the gap to Pierre Gasly and capitalize on the support promised by Steve Nielsen, he could become the cornerstone of Alpine’s resurgence in the new era of Formula 1.
