Adrian Newey has revealed that he recently went through a difficult period due to health issues, admitting that he was not at his best during the early stages of his Aston Martin journey. The legendary Formula 1 designer says he has now fully recovered and is feeling back to 100% as he focuses on helping the team prepare for the future.
The aerodynamic genius has overcome a difficult period
Looking ahead to the new Formula 1 era, Lawrence Stroll has gradually assembled what many considered a dream trio for Aston Martin: Fernando Alonso, Honda and Adrian Newey. However, so far this season, two-thirds of that ambitious project have failed to deliver the expected results following the introduction of the new regulations.
Both Honda’s new power unit and Adrian Newey have, so far, been unable to provide Fernando Alonso with the competitive package the team had hoped for. The legendary aerodynamicist is now aiming to convince the two-time Formula 1 world champion to remain with Aston Martin for the 2027 season, with significant upgrades scheduled to debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break.
Making Newey’s task even more challenging this year was the fact that Aston Martin was already trailing several rivals in terms of development. On top of that, the former Red Bull technical mastermind was also dealing with personal health problems during an important phase of the project.
“I’m fine now, but it was a difficult period,” Adrian Newey said. “To be honest, I wasn’t operating at 100% last year. I had to balance my health and my work much more carefully. The team handled the situation incredibly well. I maintained a great relationship with the engineers, and I don’t think it caused any major problems. It shows just how flexible and supportive everyone here is.”
